The Department of Environment and Climate celebrates World Environment Day with a 'Sustainable Marathon'.

The program includes community clean-up efforts - João de Aquino/City Hall The Municipal Secretariat for the Environment and Climate (SMAC) promoted, this Friday, June 5th, World Environment Day, clean-up campaigns, environmental awareness actions, and tree planting in different regions of Rio de Janeiro. The program is part of the “Sustainable Marathon,” with more than 50 activities until June 8th, reinforcing the interaction between members of the department's programs and the population of Rio de Janeiro.
Secretary Livia Galdino highlighted the importance of collective work for a greener, more resilient, and sustainable city:
– This is a way to involve the people of Rio de Janeiro in the discussion of our city's environmental and climate agenda. On this important date, World Environment Day, we invest in actions such as planting, cleaning rivers and beaches, which mobilize our community to improve our public spaces in our municipality.
At Flamengo landfill, in the South Zone, a cleanup effort marked the beginning of the morning. Near Post 0, the collected waste was sorted, as explained by biologist Louise Schiatti, from the Environmental Education Center (CEA):
– We perform gravimetric analysis of this material, which consists of separating the waste we collect, classifying it as plastic, metal, cigarette butts, styrofoam, and quantifying it. Then, this material is sent to the Secretary's Green Factory, located in Cordovil, and will be redirected to recycling, giving new meaning to this waste on this very important date. It's an action of awareness, sensitization, and also integration of our internal team.
Throughout the morning, environmental agents spoke with the public. Some stopped and expressed interest in volunteering for environmental preservation efforts. Landscape architecture professor Flávia Nunes led a tour of the Aterro, an urban park designed by Burle Marx in the 60s. In the afternoon, the children's Folia de Reis group 'A Brilhante Estrela de Belém' performed at the site and, before the procession, took the opportunity to learn about oil disposal.
The engineer Júlia Souza, 27, also passed by the site and left a message for all residents and visitors of the city:
– Our Rio de Janeiro is wonderful, it has a vast and diverse natural environment, and we are primarily responsible for ensuring we continue to have the privilege of admiring it all. So, let's preserve the environment so we can have this extraordinary opportunity to live here and coexist with the exuberant nature of our city.
Also in the South Zone, Rocinha received a cleanup effort with the participation of the Guardians of the Rivers, local leaders who work in cleaning water bodies and raising public awareness.
In Curicica, in the West Zone, teams from the Guardians of the Rivers and the Guardians of the Forests, community female leaders, joined together in clean-up efforts. Susana Naspolini Park, in Realengo, also in the West Zone, hosted the event 'Women's Circle: Female Leadership for Sustainability and Collective Care', with members of the Guardians of the Forests and Hortas Cariocas. Vegetables grown by the Hortas Cariocas program were distributed.
The 'Sustainable Turnaround' also went to the North Zone, promoting planting actions in the Sports Corridor of Ilha do Governador.
This Saturday, June 6th, the program continues with a focus on workshops and screenings of short films about the environment, starting at 14 pm, at Quinta da Boa Vista, in front of the circus.
