- The Department of Environment and Climate awards the Green Carnival Seal to carnival groups and mega-groups.
Charanga Talismã received the Folia Verde Seal during its parade in Vila Kosmos, in the North Zone - Press Release Rio's carnival groups and mega-groups that commit to sustainable practices are receiving the Folia Verde Seal for Carnival 2026. This Sunday (February 15th), Charanga Talismã received the certification from the Municipal Secretariat of Environment and Climate (SMAC) during its traditional parade that combines music, art, and performance. With a vibrant, circus-like atmosphere, the group performed on Avenida Meriti, in Vila Kosmos, in the North Zone, with the theme "Latin American Union: it enchants me".
Next, Divinas Tretas received the seal of approval in the presence of the Secretary of Environment and Climate, Tainá de Paula. At Aterro do Flamengo, in the South Zone, the bloco transforms the street into a stage for diversity, respect, and the affirmation of rights.
– This year, Divinas Pretas receives the Folia Verde Seal, which represents a commitment to environmental education, but also to the continuity of a greener Rio, with more trees, with everyone taking care of it – highlighted the secretary.
On Carnival Saturday (February 14th), certification was awarded to four groups, the first of which was the legendary Cordão da Bola Preta, which held its 107th parade in downtown Rio.
– I want to acknowledge the role that Cordão da Bola Preta plays in strengthening the waste pickers of Carnival. Bola Preta has won the Folia Verde Seal for the second consecutive year for the tons of waste collected, not only collected but also recycled. Bola Preta has environmental, social, and cultural responsibility – highlighted Tainá de Paula, who presented the certification to the president of the bloco, Pedro Ernesto Marinho.
Next, it was Bloco Exagerado's turn to receive the Folia Verde Seal, in Tiradentes Square, also in downtown Rio. Bringing joy, irreverence, and the timeless classics of Cazuza, from Barão Vermelho to his solo career, to the streets, the bloco is known for presenting reinterpretations that mix baião, maracatu, samba, funk, ijexá, and rock. There was also a tribute to the 90th birthday of Lucinha Araújo, the MPB idol's mother, with the theme "My Flower, My Baby".
Completing Saturday's Carnival with well-deserved recognition, the Terreirada Block, in Quinta da Boa Vista, brought joy to revelers while reinforcing its commitment to the environment and a more sustainable city, as did the Beco do Rato Block, in Lapa.
Green Folia
The Folia Verde campaign, conducted by SMAC, reinforces the commitment to transforming Rio's Carnival into a benchmark for sustainability. For the 2026 edition, approximately 450 professionals are mobilized, including recyclable material collectors and members of the Guardians of the Forests program, which brings together female community leaders. The actions are carried out in street parades and also in the parades at Marquês de Sapucaí and Estrada Intendente Magalhães, focusing on reducing waste generation and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. In 2024, 12 tons of waste were collected; in 2025, the volume reached 40 tons.
