Brazilian Coast Monitoring System - Disclosure In an unprecedented partnership with the Brazilian Coast Monitoring System (SiMCosta), Rio City Hall has begun receiving information about the city's sea conditions. Real-time monitoring offers decision-makers the possibility of taking preventive action in cases of storm surges – alerting the population about the closure of bike paths, for example. The data is collected from sensors installed near Copacabana Fort and Cotunduba Island, in Leme, in the city's South Zone. Citizens who want to monitor sea conditions in real time at these points can now access the website https://simcosta.furg.br/home.
The link allows users to access and monitor in real time aspects such as wave height, direction, and period, as well as wind intensity, water temperature, and several other parameters. According to Lucas Padilha, municipal secretary for the Environment, this cooperation will allow monitoring data to be used to improve forecasts and extend the information to other points along the coast.
– This monitoring will allow the City Hall to act with even greater predictability, avoiding disruptions to citizens. We will have data to support the City Hall’s studies and historical series – says Padilha.
The manager of the Marine Life Center of the Municipal Department of the Environment, Simone Pennafirme, adds that the new information will help the city face the effects of climate change:
– This data is completely public and open for different uses. Governments at different levels will increasingly need to act with foresight and anticipation of problems arising from the climate emergency. We are strengthening Rio’s adaptation and mitigation policies.
The chief executive of the Rio Operations Center (COR), Alexandre Cardeman, explains that the SiMCosta data will be integrated into the city's Dashboard, a platform that brings together a series of weather, traffic and transport data:
– Access to this information, in real time, directly on our dashboard, will allow its analysis together with other operational data, such as rainfall, assisting in decision-making, preventive actions and prompt response to incidents.
