City Hall removed more than 20 tons of rubble from illegal landfill - Rio City Hall

An illegal landfill with 20 tons of construction waste was closed this Tuesday (23/03), in a joint action by the City's Department of the Environment, the Jacarepaguá Subprefecture, Military Police, Comlurb and CET-Rio, in Jacarepaguá, in the West Zone. The illegal dumping of rubble in front of the Vila Olímpica de Mato Alto, in Praça Seca, was causing flooding, loss of drainage infrastructure due to clogging of galleries and silting of canals in the region, in addition to pollution and unnecessary increase in public administration costs for removal.

During the operation, approximately 20 tons of waste were removed, consisting of different types of materials generated during renovations, repairs and demolitions of construction sites, as well as rubble from land excavations. Civil police officers from the 28th DP (Praça Seca), who supported the operation, took two people suspected of committing environmental crimes to the police station.

Irregular waste disposal causes pollution and silting of canals in the region – Rio City Hall

The Department of the Environment estimates that approximately 2,7 tons of construction waste are generated daily in the city of Rio. Of this, 1,5 tons do not receive environmentally appropriate disposal, since cart drivers and unaccredited companies dispose of it irregularly, often dumping it in clandestine dumps or even on public roads.

– This illegal disposal of waste causes great damage to the Environment and, therefore, will not be tolerated – says the Secretary of the Environment, Eduardo Cavaliere.

– We will act whenever necessary – adds deputy mayor Talita Galhardo.
