Department of the Environment fines Cedae for leaking sewage from a lift in Recreio

Cedae will be fined R$150 for dumping sewage into the Canal das Taxas, in Recreio dos Bandeirantes, in the city's West Zone. Inspectors from the Environmental Defense Coordination Office of the Rio de Janeiro State Department of the Environment identified two leaks connected to the Recreio pumping station, operated by the state company, which did not report any type of problem to the City Hall. The action, which took place on Monday afternoon (19/04), was carried out in partnership with the Barra Subprefecture. On Tuesday morning (20/04), a leak was still occurring at the site.

The municipal secretary of the Environment, Eduardo Cavaliere, stated that the state sanitation company will be fined for failing to comply with the federal Environmental Crimes Law (9.605/1998). The site of the environmental crime is located between two municipal parks: Chico Mendes and Marapendi, and is home to wildlife, such as the broad-snouted caiman (Caiman latirostris). There is even a study underway to annex the area to Chico Mendes Park.

– This amount of sewage in an extremely sensitive area is unacceptable. The city of Rio has environmental authority, and we count on the support of society to report it – said Cavaliere.

One of the places with the highest levels of waste is at the intersection of Avenida Gláucio Gil and Rua Professor Hermes Lima. According to the Department of the Environment, Cedae is a repeat offender, given that the damage occurred in previous years: there are several inspection reports indicating problems at the same pumping station, which is responsible for taking sewage to the Barra outfall.

The deputy mayor of Barra, Raphael Lima, highlighted that the City Hall will remain vigilant in preventing practices that are harmful to the environment.

– Unfortunately, failures in Cedae’s pumping stations have been a recurring problem. We will prevent these failures, the sanitary system has to work and not dump sewage into the canal.
