The Rio de Janeiro City Hall, through the Municipal Secretariat for the Environment and Climate (SMAC) and with the support of the West Zone Subprefecture, carried out an operation on the morning of Thursday (29/9) to demolish an irregular construction inside the Fazenda do Viegas Urban Park, in Senador Camará. Environmental inspectors found an invasion of the area, with vegetation being cleared and a masonry building, with several items of clothing and kitchen utensils, as well as a horse, indicating that people were staying at the site. A backhoe was used for the demolition.

– We are monitoring cases of illegal construction in environmentally protected areas, and our teams will continue to work seven days a week with the aim of combating irregularities and preserving the environment and green areas of our city – highlighted the vice-mayor and municipal secretary of Environment and Climate, Nilton Caldeira.

The area is almost 100 square meters and is located on an isolated hill, a green island that is part of the Pedra Branca Massif, in a region dominated by drug trafficking. The farm's main house is an architectural work belonging to the colonial period, dating back to the 1938th century, listed in XNUMX by the National Institute of Historical and Artistic Heritage (Iphan) and hides invaluable historical, environmental and cultural values for Rio de Janeiro and Brazil.

The SMAC Environmental Defense coordinator, José Maurício Padrone, highlighted the importance of the vegetation in the Fazenda do Viegas Urban Park, which significantly affects the microclimate, contributing to an increase in relative humidity, a reduction in temperature and, consequently, improving thermal comfort for nearby residents.

The operation also had the support of the 14th Military Police Battalion (Bangu).
