An irregular subdivision in Campo Grande, in the West Zone, on the fringes of the Pedra Branca State Park, was dismantled by the Municipal Department of the Environment, this Thursday (13/05). The condominium was being built without any license or authorization from the government, on the slope of Morro do Cabuçu, access to Monte das Oliveiras, with the removal of the Atlantic Forest, the filling of a water drainage channel and the movement of earth, subject to landslides.

Residents of the formal areas of Fernão de Magalhães Street report that irregular interventions in the area began in 2019. The Department of the Environment had notified the developers to immediately demolish the structures of what would be a guardhouse and a house. The lots had been negotiated for values starting at R$40. The action was supported by the 40th Battalion of the Military Police.

– This occupation of protected areas without any control will not be tolerated. Once again, we issue a warning: do not buy properties, land, or houses without documentation. We are firmly confronting this criminal industry – stated Secretary Eduardo Cavaliere.

Pedra Branca State Park was created in 1974 to preserve green areas. It is under pressure from 18 neighborhoods, many of which are controlled by drug traffickers or militia members. It is considered one of the largest urban forests in the world, covering 12.500 hectares. Illegal construction has led to the deforestation of native vegetation and the displacement of animals typical of the biome.
