In celebration of Earth Day, Rio de Janeiro's Environment Secretary, Eduardo Cavaliere, announced on Thursday (22/04) the creation of the Amazon and Atlantic Forest coordinators at the Forum of Environment Secretaries of Brazilian Capitals (CB27). The announcement was made in the letter “Green Regeneration: Capitals for the Defense of Biomes”, which highlights the relevance and protagonism of the 26 capitals and the Federal District in their commitment to sustainability.

The position recognizes that the preservation of ecosystems is “a necessary condition for the preservation of the country’s rich biodiversity and fundamental for mitigating the effects of climate emergencies”, and points to environmental federalism as one of the ways to bring together national and international efforts in defense of biomes.

– The Amazon Rainforest works like a water pump. It pulls moisture evaporated into the continent. If we lose these biomes, the impacts will occur in a cascading effect, for example, in soybean production in the Midwest or in extreme weather events here in Rio de Janeiro, a city in the Atlantic Forest biome. With this, what we are affirming and warning is that discussing the conservation of the Amazon is indeed an urban issue – points out Secretary Eduardo Cavaliere, president of CB27.

The Environment Secretaries chosen to coordinate the portfolios are Sérgio Brazão e Silva, from Belém, who will lead the Amazon coordination, and Edna França, from Salvador, for the Atlantic Forest coordination.
