City General Archive begins free lato sensu postgraduate course

The General City Archives, in partnership with the Institute of Social and Political Studies of the State University of Rio de Janeiro (IESP/UERJ), held the inaugural lecture of the postgraduate course on politics and society, with an emphasis on the history of the city of Rio de Janeiro, at the City Palace on Monday (November 06). The inaugural lecture was given by doctors Rosa Maria Araújo, president of the Archives, and Chystian Lynch, professor at IESP.

The course is completely free for students approved in the selection process held in September. The City of Rio will be responsible for the costs of the entire lato sensu postgraduate course. The president of the General Archives of the City celebrated the inaugural class and congratulated the group selected by the selection committee.

– The course will last one year and will be taught by professors from the Archive and IESP, with exclusive content on the history of Rio. At the end of the course, students will produce monographs on the history of the city, building even more knowledge – said Rosa Maria Araújo.

The inaugural class was attended by the municipal secretary of Culture, Marcelo Calero, the coordinator of Postgraduate Studies at IESP, José Eduardo Szwako, and the pro-rector of Postgraduate Studies and Research at UERJ, professor Luis Antonio Campinho Pereira da Mota.

– Today’s inaugural lecture marks the materialization of a project: to restore the hope and pride of belonging of the people of Rio and to find a way to rescue the city’s reason for being. The General Archives has played a fundamental role in this, functioning as a place of memory and, at the same time, of knowledge production – said Calero.

The goal of the postgraduate course is to provide students with excellent training in sociology and politics to study the city of Rio and gain a deeper understanding of its history. Classes will be held at the General Archives of the City of Rio.

Professor Luis Antonio Campinho Pereira da Mota, who represented UERJ, praised the partnership with the City of Rio:

– It is our role, as a center of science and thought, to contribute to the good of Rio de Janeiro society by sharing knowledge and expertise. We will provide all necessary support for this partnership.

With classes in History, Sociology, Political Science, Economics and International Relations, the course is organized into fourteen subjects, in three modules: Democracy and the State; Public Sphere and Civil Society; and Inequalities and Work. The course load is 375 hours.

Chrystian Lynch, professor at IESP, highlighted the importance of a course that encourages the study of the municipality:

– All cities and states have programs to study themselves. Accustomed to thinking about Brazil, Rio de Janeiro did not have a single specialization course or master’s degree that would help it understand itself from a global perspective. Without adequate, collected and centralized information, it is not possible to formulate a realistic global strategy to recover the city’s privileged status on the national scene. You need to know in order to act.
