The city of Rio de Janeiro celebrates its 461st anniversary with a mass at Christ the Redeemer.

Mass for the 461st anniversary of the city of Rio - Photo: Iago Campos Mayor Eduardo Paes and Deputy Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere participated, this Sunday (March 1st), in the celebrations for the 461st anniversary of the city of Rio de Janeiro, at the Christ the Redeemer Archdiocesan Sanctuary. The traditional Thanksgiving Mass was presided over by the Archbishop of the capital, Cardinal Dom Orani João Tempesta. Afterwards, Paes and Cavaliere attended the traditional cutting of the 4,61-meter-long cake, organized by the Society of Friends of Rua da Carioca and Adjacencies (Sarca), in honor of the date.
"Today is a very special day. Never in the history of this city has a mayor blown out this candle 14 times. I am the first to blow it out 14 times. Being mayor of the city of Rio de Janeiro is a great honor for me. May God bless the people of Rio and those who visit us. In fact, our visitors are always very welcome. This city is the heart of Brazil, it is the epitome of what this incredible country called Brazil means. Long live Rio de Janeiro on its 461st anniversary!" – said Eduardo Paes after the mass.
During the ceremony, Dom Orani made a special request for peace:
– We can live this beautiful moment here and pray for everyone. We pray for peace in our city and for peace in the world. We are aware of the events happening around the world and the dangers people face. We hope for an experience of peace and community. We also pray that our city continues to be welcoming – said the religious leader.
During the event, to the sound of "Cidade Maravilhosa" performed by the Sarca band, the "Most Carioca of All" trophy, produced by the organization, was awarded. Paes, Cavaliere, and other guests received the award. The entire ceremony was open to the public.
– Rio de Janeiro is spectacular! Being at the foot of Christ the Redeemer on the city's anniversary is a privilege – revealed lawyer Maria Cândida Benevides, 56, a resident of Maceió who is on vacation in Rio with her family.
