Story of overcoming and dedication marks the birth of a new mother - Disclosure/SMS

Being a mother has always been Thayssa Eduarda Nogueira's dream. This Sunday (11/05), she celebrates Mother's Day with her daughter, little Serena, who is two months old, for the first time. The baby was born on February 28 at the Albert Schweitzer Municipal Hospital (HMAS), in Realengo, West Zone of Rio de Janeiro, and soon faced 70 days of hospitalization. The union between mother and daughter resulted in a story of overcoming, proving that strength and hope can prevail over any long and arduous challenge. Now, every day is magical for the new mother, who is in the best phase of her life.

Thayssa's first daughter, baby Serena, was born prematurely, around the sixth month of pregnancy, weighing only 840 grams and measuring 34 cm. In a high-risk pregnancy due to high blood pressure, she had more than ten prenatal appointments at the Fiorello Raymundo Family Clinic and the Mariska Ribeiro Women's Hospital, both in Bangu. Despite attempts to keep the baby in the womb for a safer birth, premature birth was inevitable.

The little fighter spent four days intubated. Then, another 20 days on oxygen and another 30 days on ventilator support. She also spent seven days on antibiotics. Time went by, and she spent the festive seasons like Carnival and Easter at HMAS with her parents. Her grandparents never missed a day visiting. The Kangaroo method was important during this period, bringing mother and daughter closer together for skin-to-skin contact. With the support of the unit's neonatology team, Serena responded satisfactorily to the treatment and now weighs 2 kg and is 43 cm tall. In total, she spent 37 days in the intensive care unit (ICU) and 33 days in the intermediate care unit (ICU).

– We are spending Mother’s Day at home, I am very happy. What gave me strength during the hospitalization period was that she reacted so well to everything. I was sure that my daughter was in good hands at the hospital. She is very smart and I only wish the best for her – said mother Thayssa, who left the hospital with Serena on May 8, when the baby was discharged on the eve of Mother’s Day.

The maternity ward at the Albert Schweitzer Municipal Hospital specializes in high-risk fetal and maternal deliveries. From the Delivery Room to Neonatology, all technological support is guaranteed.

– Serena was one of 23 babies weighing less than 1500g born this year at HMAS. Our multidisciplinary team is highly specialized. We are a Baby-Friendly Hospital and humanization is a pillar to offer the best care to our patients – explained the medical coordinator of Neonatology, Luciane Amaral, who has worked at the unit since 2016.

To celebrate Mother's Day, the 13 maternity hospitals and the Birthing Center of the Rio municipal health network have prepared a program of special activities for mothers and babies and their family members who will be spending this day at the unit. Some of the activities include: delivery of gifts and layette kits, celebratory meals and distribution of chocolates, a mural honoring mothers and massages for postpartum women. These initiatives create a space for solidarity and make the hospitalization environment more pleasant.
