To celebrate National Blood Donor Day, the Super Centro Carioca de Saúde, in Benfica, is holding a blood donation drive this Tuesday (November 25th), open to the public from 10 am to 4 pm, in the hall of the Centro Carioca do Olho. The action is carried out in partnership with Hemorio, responsible for supplying blood products to more than 200 public hospitals in Rio de Janeiro, and will help strengthen stocks for December, a month in which, due to the end-of-year festivities and vacation period, the number of donations usually decreases considerably, while demand increases.

– Blood donation is an act of love for others. We can buy medicines and supplies, but the blood supply depends exclusively on the voluntary donation of citizens. December and January are months when, traditionally, many people are traveling, the roads are full, and this has two repercussions: the absence of donors at blood centers and the increase in the number of traffic accidents, which makes the demand for blood in emergency hospitals grow. That is why we are taking advantage of this National Blood Donor Day to talk about the importance of this voluntary act and to invite more people to adopt the good habit of donating blood – says the municipal Secretary of Health, Daniel Soranz.

Blood is irreplaceable and fundamental in emergency care, surgeries, cancer treatments, severe anemia treatments, and various other clinical conditions. The greater the number of regular donors, the safer and more stable the healthcare system remains. Each bag of blood collected can save up to four lives, and within 24 hours the donor's body begins to naturally replenish the substances removed, allowing for a new donation after eight weeks for men and 12 for women, when the blood components will have been reconstituted.

Carlos Alexandre Santos Prado is 53 years old and works as an administrative assistant at the Super Centro Carioca de Saúde. He donates blood regularly and, since the unit began conducting donation campaigns in partnership with Hemorio, he hasn't missed an opportunity to literally leave his blood at work to help save lives.

"Is there a better feeling than being able to do good for those in need? I'm sure there isn't! Knowing that that portion of donated blood will save lives is sensational! I donated for the first time when I was 19 years old and, since then, I do it whenever possible. For those who receive the transfusion, there is the hope of a healthy life, of hope and new achievements," says donor Carlos Alexandre.

Donating blood is safe and requires only a few basic criteria: presenting an official photo ID; being between 16 and 69 years old (with authorization for those under 18); being in good health; and weighing over 50 kilos. Fasting is not necessary, but it is recommended to avoid fatty foods in the four hours prior to the procedure and to be well-rested.

People who have had tattoos or piercings must wait six months before donating. Those with piercings in mucous membrane areas must wait one year after removal. Those who have had COVID-19 must wait 10 days after recovery. Thirty days after donation, the volunteer can access the results of laboratory tests performed from the collected sample.

The campaign takes place during a period when blood stocks typically decrease, especially at the end of the year when demand tends to increase. With this initiative, the Super Centro Carioca de Saúde aims to raise awareness and facilitate public access to blood donation, contributing to the replenishment of blood banks.
