Project developed by the Municipal Department of Tourism in partnership with Senac RJ has already qualified more than 2 professionals for the sector - Photo: Disclosure/Sylvio Loureiro/Senac RJ Another 235 students graduated from the Rio de Janeiro School of Tourism, a project implemented by SMTUR-RIO in partnership with Senac RJ, with the objective of training and qualifying professionals in various segments of the tourism sector. The certificates were presented in a ceremony this Wednesday (6), by the municipal secretary of Tourism, Daniela Maia, and the regional director of Senac RJ, Sérgio Ribeiro, at the institution's Polytechnic Center, in Riachuelo.
"The city of Rio de Janeiro congratulates and thanks you all for this achievement. We know it's a dream come true and the result of a lot of effort. The Rio de Janeiro City Hall increasingly understands the importance of training this crucial workforce, as tourism is growing in Rio, and this represents jobs for our city. We believe, together with Senac RJ, that you will enter the job market and help us become an increasingly spectacular city," said Daniela Maia.
"The partnership with SMTURRIO reinforces Senac RJ's commitment to professional development and strengthening the tourism sector, which is strategic to the city's economy. Celebrating this moment is a source of pride, especially since we have already contributed to the training of over 2 professionals, ready to provide excellent service to the city's visitors," added Sérgio Ribeiro.
With the awarding of these certificates, the School completes the third phase of the project, which since 2022 has certified 2.143 students in subjects such as: ecotourism; basic sign language, English, and Spanish at two levels; event organization; cultural tourism; development of cultural itineraries and local tourist information; and, focused on hospitality: hotel reception; housekeeping in lodging establishments; etiquette, protocol, and ceremony, among others.
In addition to professional training, the partnership provides intermediation between students and the job market through Senac Interliga, a platform that provides students with access to job opportunities. The courses are completely free and open to those over 18 who live in Rio de Janeiro, with food and transportation assistance included. Classes are held at six Senac locations: Barra da Tijuca, Campo Grande, Madureira, Riachuelo, Copacabana, and Botafogo.

The majority of students who seek out the Escola Carioca de Turismo are women (71,5%), have completed high school (68,5%), live in the West Zone (over 30%), and have an average age of 36. A tiny percentage (2%) are foreigners.
The most popular courses are Basic English 1 and Hotel Reception: Operations and Procedures, which rank first and second among both men and women. Third place goes to Basic Libras 1 for women and Cultural Tourism for men. Event Management Techniques comes in fourth for both genders, and fifth place goes to Cultural Tourism for women and Basic Applied Spanish for men.
Of the 10 neighborhoods with the highest number of students enrolled at the Rio de Janeiro School of Tourism, Campo Grande, in the West Zone, has the highest concentration of students (186), followed by Copacabana (127), in the South Zone, Bangu (89) and Santa Cruz (74), also in the West Zone, and Tijuca (72), in the North Zone. The others: Centro (70), Guaratiba (62), Realengo (57) and Jacarepaguá and Recreio dos Bandeirantes, both with 53 students.
