Souza Aguiar Hospital launches special blood donation campaign.

This Thursday (11), the Souza Aguiar Municipal Hospital (HMSA), in the Center, is holding a special blood donation campaign. Those interested in participating as volunteers for donation can go to the unit from 10 am to 16 pm, in the OTICS Multipurpose Room, on the second floor of the hospital. The action aims to increase stocks during the end-of-year holidays, a time when services usually intensify.

The campaign is the result of a partnership between HMSA and Hemorio, responsible for supplying blood products to more than 200 public hospitals in Rio de Janeiro, mainly for emergencies. Donating blood is a safe act that saves lives. To be a blood donor, you must be between 16 and 69 years old (those under 18 must have authorization from a guardian); be in good health; weigh more than 50 kilos; and present an official photo ID. Fasting is not required, but it is recommended that you have not eaten fatty foods in the last four hours. Another important factor is being well-rested.

Within 24 hours of donation, the donor's body begins to replenish some of the substances that were removed, so the next donation can be made after eight weeks for men and 12 for women, as the blood will already have its components reconstituted. After collection, the blood components are separated, and up to four people can benefit from the donation.

People who have had tattoos or piercings must wait six months before donating. And those with piercings in mucous membrane areas can only donate one year after the piercing is removed. Those who have recently had COVID-19 need to wait 10 days after recovery. Thirty days after donating, the volunteer can pick up the results of laboratory tests performed with a small blood sample taken at the time of collection.
