The Souza Aguiar Municipal Hospital, in downtown Rio, is holding a blood donation campaign this Tuesday (26/11). The campaign is the result of a partnership between the hospital and Hemorio, which provides blood products to more than 200 public hospitals in Rio de Janeiro, mainly for emergencies. Donations can be made from 10 am to 16 pm in the Otics Multipurpose Room, located on the second floor of the hospital.

After collection, the blood components are separated and up to four people can benefit from the donation. Within 24 hours of donation, the donor's body begins to replenish some of the substances that were removed, so that the next collection can be done after eight weeks for men and 12 for women, as the blood will already have the reconstituted components.

Donating blood is a safe and life-saving act. To be a blood donor, you must present an official photo ID; be between 16 and 69 years old (those under 18 must have authorization from a guardian); be in good health; and weigh more than 50 kg. You do not need to be fasting. However, it is recommended that you have not eaten fatty foods in the last four hours. Another important factor is to be well-rested.

After 30 days of donating, the volunteer can get the results of laboratory tests performed on a small blood sample taken at the time of collection. People who have had tattoos or piercings must wait six months to donate. Those who have recently had COVID-19 must wait ten days after recovering.
