- PAC Jardim Maravilha will have a second phase of works to combat flooding.
The Jardim Maravilha PAC project was presented to the public - Photo: Marco Antonio Lima/Rio City Hall The deputy mayor of Rio, Eduardo Cavaliere, presented to the population this Saturday (November 22nd) the works of the PAC Jardim Maravilha, which is the second phase of infrastructure works in the region to combat flooding. In this stage, a dike will be built around the river, which will function as a large dam, preventing the frequent flooding of the Cabuçu-Piraquê River, in addition to the construction of reservoirs.
– Throughout this administration, significant investments have been made in Jardim Maravilha, including interventions that have already mitigated the effects of rainfall in the region. The project encompasses the construction of a dike, urbanization, and canalization of the river, which will result in a large urbanized area, positively impacting the lives of approximately 30 people – stated Eduardo Cavaliere.
These works will provide a solution to the flooding in Jardim Maravilha, which is associated with the flood zone of the Cabuçu-Piraquê River. The subdivision is considered the largest in the city. R$ 340 million will be invested in the interventions, with resources from the Federal Government, through the New PAC (Growth Acceleration Program), of the Ministry of Cities.
Measuring 3,4 km in length, up to two and a half meters high, and wide enough to accommodate a bike path on its walls, the new dike, inspired by Dutch designs, will protect the development from flooding. A connecting canal running along Avenida Barão de Cocais will channel local drainage water to three large open reservoirs.
– We will begin another crucial phase of interventions in Jardim Maravilha, a locality chronically plagued by floods. This area represents, in fact, one of the most serious flooding problems in our city, particularly in the West Zone. In the Jardim Maravilha and Guaratiba region, it is estimated that 30 people are directly affected by this vast flood zone and its historical problems. Thus, our purpose is to directly benefit this population through integrated urbanization, which will give them dignity through paving, the supply of treated water, basic sanitation and an effective drainage system, guaranteeing a safer territory for all its inhabitants – said the Municipal Secretary of Infrastructure, Wanderson Santos.
Cavaliere and Wanderson Santos presented the second phase of the PAC Jardim Maravilha project to residents of the region, at the Ciep Posseiro Mário Vaz schoolyard in Guaratiba, in the West Zone. One of them was Vanessa de Souza, a 28-year-old cleaning lady, who celebrated the announcement of the works.
– The PAC Maravilha project will be a relief and a source of hope. We worry a lot about the rain. The works will help us because flooding is an old problem here in the neighborhood – said Vanessa.
The reservoirs are capable of accumulating a combined total of approximately 231 million liters of water, equivalent to about 13 reservoirs the size of the one in Praça da Bandeira. The project will benefit an average of 30 residents of Jardim Maravilha and an area of 1,7 million square meters. The works will be carried out by the Rio-Águas Foundation and are expected to begin in the first half of 2026.
First phase of construction
In March of this year, the Rio de Janeiro City Hall delivered the first phase of works in Jardim Maravilha through the Bairro Maravilha program. With an investment exceeding R$ 50 million, the project, also carried out by the Rio-Águas Foundation, built drainage infrastructure, sewage and water supply networks, as well as paving and accessible sidewalks on 27 streets in the neighborhood, benefiting thousands of residents.
A recreational area was also built on Avenida Barão de Cocais. The interventions transformed an area of the neighborhood equivalent to more than 320 square meters, bringing more quality of life to the residents.
