Planetarium entertains and teaches children during school holidays

The Rio Planetarium, the largest in Latin America, has prepared a special program for the winter school holidays. Until July 30, the attractions of the cultural facility, previously restricted to weekends and holidays, will also be available during weekdays. The goal of the “Holidays at the Planetarium” is to entertain and teach children with activities that introduce them to scientific knowledge.

– We want to democratize access to science and make it easier for children to develop an interest in astronomy from an early age. We see the Rio Planetarium as a playful space for discovery and first contact with science. We want children to complement their classroom knowledge here – explained the president of the Rio Planetarium Foundation, Renan Uccelli.

From Tuesday to Sunday, there are attractions for all ages, but with a focus on children and teenagers. On Wednesday and Saturday evenings, there will be free sky observation. Highlights of the program include the sessions “Playing among the Stars” and “An Adventure at the Planetarium”, aimed at children, and “The Sky of Rio de Janeiro”.

Playing among the stars: audiovisual immersion

The “Playing Among the Stars” session (Tuesday to Sunday, at 11:15 a.m. and 15:15 p.m., and Sundays also at 16:30 p.m.) is a partnership between the Rio Planetarium and MultiRio – Municipal Multimedia Company. In the Carl Sagan dome, children will experience the adventures of the protagonist Celeste and her cat Mourão, pointing out the constellations and traveling through the planets of the Solar System, in a unique, playful and fun immersive experience.

“A Planetarium Adventure”: Instructive Summit Session

“An Adventure at the Planetarium” (Wednesday to Sunday at 14pm and Saturdays and Sundays at 10:30am) is a film shown in fulldome format. This means that it is shown inside the dome: the production has a round format and is distorted to adapt to the fact that the screen where it will be projected is not simply flat, but curved. The theme, which is a delight for children, is an epic journey through the mysteries of the universe. The film tells the story of the duo Monitor and Mouse, who take the audience on a trip to space showing the planets, the Sun, the Moon, the stars, the nebulae, the galaxies and even a black hole. The children's film was produced by the Rio Planetarium in partnership with Estúdio Labareda.

Experiments and live sky observation

In addition to the two immersive children's films, from Tuesday to Sunday, starting at 10 am, at the Museu do Universo, there are the permanent exhibitions “From Genesis to Apocalypse”, with a collection of meteorites from the Museu Nacional, and “Look at the Sky 2021”, with astrophotographs. The Museu do Universo also presents Interactive Experiments (which teach about phenomena such as eclipses and how the tides work) and the Nave Escola, which takes children on a journey through the universe showing incredible images of nebulae and galaxies while they learn more about the planets of the Solar System, space research and the evolution of life. On Wednesdays (17 pm) and Saturdays (16:30 pm), the special attraction “O Céu do Rio de Janeiro” (The Sky of Rio de Janeiro) offers stargazing accompanied by an astronomer, who shows the main constellations visible in the skies of Rio de Janeiro and the most well-known stars. Many interesting facts about the stars and even legends associated with the constellations are covered.
