City Hall expands Rio Rotativo Digital parking system to the South Zone waterfront.

A new app-based rotating parking system starts operating this Monday (August 10th) between Leme and Leblon and will reach São Conrado, Barra da Tijuca and Tijuca by the end of the month.

The Rio de Janeiro City Hall, through the Municipal Transportation Secretariat (SMTR), will expand the operation of the Rio Rotativo Digital parking system in the South Zone starting next Monday (August 10th). In this new phase, the system will operate more than 1,700 parking spaces along the beachfront of the Leme, Copacabana, Ipanema, and Leblon neighborhoods, with the support of 80 accredited parking attendants, advancing the modernization of public parking management in the city. The first phase took place in Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas. By the end of the month, it will reach São Conrado, Barra da Tijuca, and Tijuca.

“The pilot project for the Digital Parking System in Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas showed that we are on the right track. The population embraced the system and used the Jaé app to park safely and conveniently. Now we will expand this experience to the coastline and other regions such as Barra, São Conrado, and Tijuca, bringing more organization, speed, and ease to those who circulate around the city. With planning, we will reach all regions of the city,” emphasizes Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere.

The expansion represents another phase in the gradual implementation of the Rio Rotativo Digital system, which definitively replaces the old paper parking tickets with a fully digital system integrated into the Jaé app. With mobile payment, electronic enforcement, and real-time monitoring of parking space occupancy, the new model offers greater convenience to drivers, increases transparency in the use of public space, and promotes vehicle turnover in high-demand areas.

The process remains the same as adopted since the beginning of operations in Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas. When parking in a designated space, the driver must access the Jaé app, select the Rio Rotativo option, automatically confirm the address identified by GPS, enter the vehicle's license plate, and choose the parking period. Payment can be made via Pix or credit card directly in the app.

The fee is R$ 2 for up to two hours of parking, which can be renewed up to a maximum of six hours, according to the system's rules. After this period, the vehicle will be subject to the regulations stipulated in the Brazilian Traffic Code.

“The Digital Parking System in Rio represents an important step forward in modernizing the city's mobility. We are offering a simpler, safer, and more transparent service for drivers, while using technology to make the management of public parking spaces more efficient. This expansion to the South Zone waterfront is another step in building a modern system that improves the citizen experience and enhances the use of public space,” highlights the Municipal Secretary of Transportation, Jorge Arraes.

The 80 accredited parking attendants will guide drivers on how the system works and how to use the Jaé app. They do not receive any payment from users. Parking time is purchased exclusively through the app.

In addition to assisting drivers, parking attendants help the Rio de Janeiro City Hall collect information about parking space occupancy through the Rio Rotativo Digital technology platform, contributing to the monitoring of the operation.

Licensed parking attendants do not have the power to enforce regulations or issue fines. Traffic violation notices continue to be issued exclusively by the traffic authority, based on images and records generated by the technological platform.

The implementation of the new area also included the installation of specific signage to guide drivers and identify parking spaces operated by Rio Rotativo Digital.

Next stage of expansion

Following its implementation in Lagoa and Orla, the expansion of the Rio Rotativo Digital system will continue, and on August 24th, the system will also begin operating on the São Conrado waterfront, in Barra da Tijuca, and in the Tijuca neighborhood. This new phase is part of the system's gradual implementation schedule, expanding its coverage to different areas of the city and offering greater convenience to drivers, better control over parking space occupancy, and more efficient management of rotating parking.

More than 37 validations in Lagoa.

Implemented on July 17th in approximately 900 parking spaces around the Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon, the Rio Rotativo Digital pilot project has already recorded over 37 validations of two-hour parking periods. This experience allowed for improvements to the operation before expansion to other areas of the city, consolidating a more modern, digital, and efficient parking model.
