The Rio City Hall handed over the revitalization of the Vereador Jorginho da SOS Olympic Village, in the Alemão Complex, in the North Zone, this Sunday (February 16). Carried out by the Municipal Urbanization Company (Rio-Urbe), an agency linked to the Municipal Infrastructure Department, the renovation restored the facilities of the Olympic Village that serve the residents of Alemão and surrounding areas, including the main administration building, the Professor Anderson Sandes Multi-Sports Gymnasium, the children's playground, the Senior Citizens' Academy, the athletics track, the swimming pool and the lighting. The investment made was R$2 million.
Mayor Eduardo Paes, Municipal Infrastructure Secretary Wanderson Santos and RioLuz President Rafael Thompson participated in the ceremony.
– We are here today to pay tribute to Professor Anderson Sandes, who gives his name to the Gymnasium, a person who dedicated his life to educating our children here in this place and bringing health to everyone's lives. May he always inspire this place and the new generation of good people who are born and raised here in Alemão – said the mayor.
The main administration building had its coverings, frames, fixtures, metalwork, partitions and paintwork renewed. The fire prevention and fighting facilities and the electrical and plumbing systems underwent improvements. The kitchen received an exhaust fan installation. The multi-sports gymnasium received a cement floor and its fences were repaired. The roof of the court also received care, as did the changing rooms. New toys, benches and a synthetic grass floor were also installed in the children's playground to welcome families.
The equipment at the Senior Citizens' Academy underwent maintenance and painting, the floor was refurbished and the area received new equipment. The athletics track received a new rubber floor and the drainage grates and floodlights were replaced. The swimming pool underwent a complete renovation. All of its lining was replaced, the pumps and filters underwent maintenance, as well as the electrical and hydraulic systems.
– We now have a space where we can develop sports activities, not only with children and teenagers, but also with the elderly. It is a work to provide a better quality of life to the people who need it most, here in Complexo do Alemão – said the Secretary of Infrastructure, Wanderson Santos.
RioLuz modernized the lighting, installing 58 LED lights on site, in addition to 56 projectors, 46 fiber posts, which are more resistant and durable, and 308 meters of new cabling.
About the Olympic Village Councilor Jorginho of SOS
The Olympic Village currently serves 1088 students distributed across 28 sports offered free of charge from Tuesday to Friday, including basketball, football, swimming, water aerobics and volleyball.
— Today the village offers classes in 28 sports to more than a thousand students, who now have access to a new swimming pool, court and completely renovated rooms — said the municipal secretary of Sports, Guilherme Schleder.
Complexo do Alemão resident Flávia Pereira Xavier has been attending the Vila Olímpica for over seven years. A student of water aerobics, stretching and gymnastics, she says she loved the renovation of the place and can enjoy it even more with her daughter Lauany, who takes swimming lessons:
— The renovations were very good, especially the pool, which was in need. The Vila is very important not only to me, but to all the students. The activities offered help our health a lot. I am undergoing cardiac treatment and since I started here my fitness has improved a lot. My daughter had comorbidities, I put her in swimming lessons and, together with the diet she followed, there was also a significant change.
The Municipal Department of Sports has 28 sports facilities, including 26 Olympic Villages, the Deodoro Radical Park and the Barra Olympic Velodrome. In 2024, more than 60 students enrolled in the sports facilities, in more than 100 modalities offered free of charge. For the first half of this year, there are already 40 registered students.
