Rio City Hall trains 790 students in training courses at Casas da Mulher Carioca

The Rio de Janeiro City Hall, through the Municipal Secretariat for Women's Policies and Promotion, awarded diplomas to 13 students from the training classes at the Casas da Mulher Carioca this Saturday (August 08). The graduation ceremonies took place at the Portela court in Madureira and at Castelo Branco University in Realengo. These courses promote social inclusion and the exercise of citizenship among those enrolled, by restoring self-esteem, autonomy and fostering female empowerment.

The municipal secretary for Women's Policies and Promotion, Joyce Trindade, participated in the ceremonies, which are part of the Festival of Women's Houses in Rio de Janeiro, and highlighted the importance of women's autonomy in confronting violence:

 

– We are here today as a collective to confront all this violence against women. It is not normal for a woman to die just for being a woman. We are talking about women who need food, dreams, jobs and in the end we are talking about guaranteeing life.

 

The event at Portela brought together 352 students from Casa da Mulher Carioca Tia Doca, in Madureira. They received their diplomas for completing the courses taught over the last three months. In addition to the graduation ceremony, the festival promoted activities such as a musical performance by the Tia Doca Choir, belly dancing, gypsy dancing and stiletto workshops, and a craft exhibition. Manicure, braiding, eyebrow design and massage therapy services were also offered. Portela's drum section also performed for the audience.

At Castelo Branco University, the festival began with the graduation of 438 women assisted by the Casa da Mulher Carioca Dinah Coutinho, in Realengo. The event featured artistic presentations and a fair for entrepreneurs.

The courses offered by the Women's Secretariat include elderly care, basic computer skills for senior citizens, basic English, eyebrow design, braiding and manicure. There are also workshops such as handbag making, graffiti and sustainable Afro-crafts.

One of the graduates of the day was Alice dos Santos Augusto, 46. For her, visiting the Casa da Mulher Carioca Dinah Coutinho was a huge achievement:

 

– I was depressed because my daughter was killed. My husband and daughters humiliated me, and that started to change when I went to the house. Today, I want to write a book about my story. For those who haven’t been to the house yet, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Women need to take God’s hand and go to the house. The girls there are very understanding, sweet, and kind.
