The mayor of Rio, Eduardo Cavaliere, inaugurated this Saturday (April 11th), in Morro do Adeus, in the Complexo do Alemão, North Zone of the city, a new space for leisure, sports and community interaction located near the cable car: the Praça do Mirante Morro do Adeus. The works are part of the Morar Carioca program, executed by the Municipal Housing Secretariat (SMH). The community will enjoy a multi-sports court, children's playground, kiosks, community areas, chapel, senior citizen fitness area, as well as paving and landscaping, in a total area of 5.155 square meters.

– We invest, dedicate ourselves, and pay close attention to those who need it most. And looking at large complexes is fundamental. Morro do Adeus is symbolic for us. Inaugurating a viewpoint, a leisure square, with this quality for the population, especially for the children, is a great source of pride. This is a government of continuity. It's only possible to invest like this when we have good management – highlighted Cavaliere.

One of the highlights of the project is the Preta Gil Musical Square, a playful space designed to encourage musical education for children, young people, and adults. With an inclusive design, it offers wind instruments, drums, and xylophones in a playful environment, featuring a musical hopscotch game, accessible painting for people with low vision, a sensory circuit, and wind tunnels.

– This project represents inclusion. We managed to ensure that these people truly had a voice, a say, and the opportunity to benefit from a grand initiative. It is important for the city hall, the public authorities, to act where the people need it, which is in the alleys and backstreets, and especially in places that we know many people don't reach – said the sub-mayor of the Large Complexes, Marlí Peçanha.

The works at Morro do Adeus involved an investment of R$ 1,98 million and will also benefit residents of other communities in the Complexo do Alemão, which has 54.202 inhabitants.

-The space has many options for the community. A sports court, a chapel, a children's area, among other services. We have, for example, an interesting place that people only imagine exists in the South Zone, on the beach: a beach soccer court! – highlighted the Municipal Secretary of Housing, Claudio Dutra.

A resident of Morro do Adeus for 40 years, 60-year-old shopkeeper Maria da Guia Pereira de Souza celebrated the new leisure area, which includes a gym for senior citizens.

"I'll be the first one to arrive at the gym every day. I love exercising. The children will also have more options for fun. The community is very grateful to the city hall," said Dona Maria.

The project to revitalize public squares has already delivered 19 new recreational areas.

Since 2025, SMH has been working on projects to revitalize squares in the North and West zones of the city. More than just urban interventions, the projects represent a direct investment in the well-being of the population, especially in more vulnerable areas, where spaces for socializing and leisure make a concrete difference in the daily lives of residents.

Nineteen new sports and leisure spaces have already been delivered to the population in areas such as Complexo da Maré, Barreira do Vasco, Complexo da Penha, Manguinhos, Rocha, Ilha do Governador, Cosmos, Pedra de Guaratiba, Bangu, Guaratiba, Padre Miguel, Santa Cruz, Anchieta, Campo Grande and Vila Kennedy. Another 31 squares are under construction.

Wedding ceremony marks inauguration

During the handover of the new space, the chapel was the setting for a wedding ceremony organized by the Subprefecture of Large Complexes. Residents of the community, the bride and groom, Verônica Araújo, 21, who was born in Morro do Adeus, and Tiago Silva, 24, walked down the aisle during the inauguration, accompanied by five couples of godparents, as well as family members and local residents. The wedding ring was carried by the couple's son, Jorge Guilherme, 2 years old.

"We dated, got engaged, and moved in together. Now we're going to fulfill our dream of a religious wedding, which is even more special," Verônica celebrated.
