Rio Mayor Eduardo Paes and Transport Secretary Maína Celidonio announced on Wednesday (January 08) the extension of the deadline for the start of exclusive operation of Jaé, the new ticketing system for municipal transport, in the city of Rio. The forecast for exclusive operation was extended to July 01.

Two factors determined the decision: although the municipality has been in negotiations for over two years, the new system has not yet been integrated with the Jaé Intermunicipal Single Ticket. In addition, the company responsible for the Jaé system is undergoing changes in its corporate structure, and the new shareholders have requested a period of time to review the procedures.

– I will not allow residents of Caxias, Nova Iguaçu, São Gonçalo, Niterói, São João do Meriti and several cities in the Metropolitan Region, who come to Rio de Janeiro, to be impacted because they were unable to integrate – declared the mayor.

Jaé is in operation throughout the public transportation system regulated by the city: BRT, VLT, municipal bus fleet (SPPO) and vans. In addition, it is possible to carry out fare integrations of the Bilhete Único Carioca (BUC) between these municipal modes, using Jaé as a payment method. The new system is completely digital. However, there is also the option of having the physical card.

Guidance is that citizens continue to migrate to Jaé

Starting July 1st, Jaé will be the only ticketing system accepted on municipal transport. With the deadline extended, people are advised to continue migrating to the new system gradually, without having to wait until the last minute. State transport, such as intercity buses, Supervia, the subway and ferries, will continue to use the Riocard system.

– We know that it is very important to have transparency in the transportation system. This process will happen. It is a huge project that has been underway for years, and we will continue. People can and should continue to register. Our advice is that they do not leave it until the last minute – said Secretary Maína.

New service stations

In addition to the 11 physical Jaé stores spread throughout the city, the Municipal Department of Transportation has created two new service points for registering and collecting Jaé cards. The two locations are located in the Naves do Conhecimento in Engenho de Dentro (Rua Arquias Cordeiro, 1516) and in Padre Miguel (Rua Bom Sossego, 380). Both will be open from Monday to Friday, from 9 am to 18 pm. More service points will soon be created and announced by the City of Rio.

Senior citizens can now receive the free card at home, free of charge

The application for the free card can be made entirely online. Seniors will receive the card free of charge at their residence. To do so, simply download the Jaé app. This way, seniors do not need to go to a store to register or to pick up the card. If necessary, seniors also have the option of one of the 13 service stations.

Workers who use transportation vouchers also do not need to go to a physical store. Registration must be done through the app.
