City Hall forms a task force to clean rivers and drains in the city to prevent flooding and flooding

With a focus on flood prevention, the City of Rio, through the Department of the Environment and the Rio-Águas Foundation, has begun new maintenance and cleaning services on at least 59 canals in the city. The work is part of four new contracts, worth R$7,1 million. In addition, in the first 30 days of this year, the Department of Conservation carried out 5.895 services to repair manholes and drains, as well as unblocking 18 thousand meters of storm drains. And, starting this Tuesday (09/02), there will be a joint action between the agency and Comlurb in the area around Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas, on Epitácio Pessoa and Borges de Medeiros avenues, with the participation of ten street cleaners. Until April, in addition to routine operations, the Conservation departments will work on a shift schedule in the city to prevent pockets of water and flooding of roads.

Rio-Águas' work began last week in the following locations: Jardim Maravilha, Vigário Geral and Recreio dos Bandeirantes. Rio's Environment Secretary, Eduardo Cavaliere, and Rio-Águas' president, Guilherme Campos, were in Jardim Maravilha, in Guaratiba, in the city's West Zone, to monitor the cleanup of the Rio dos Porcos (photo). The region is known for its recurring floods and high water, especially in the summer. The machines began cleaning the stretch between Barão dos Cocais Avenue and São José dos Campos Avenue.

Maintenance work has also begun at the mouth of the Sernambetiba Canal and the remaining channel of the São João River in Vigário Geral. In Recreio dos Bandeirantes, the Rio-Águas team is working permanently to clean and desilt the mouth of the Sernambetiba Canal to ensure that the waters of the Morto River can flow out to sea. In Vigário Geral, workers are working to unclog the channel on Doutor Adauto Street.
