International Day of Older Persons is celebrated this Monday (10/1) - Disclosure / Rio City Hall The City Hall of Rio, through the Municipal Secretariat for Healthy Aging and Quality of Life (SEMESQV), has prepared a special program to celebrate Senior Citizens Month. Throughout October, different actions will be carried out with activities focused on promoting health, social interaction, and leisure.
The program begins on October 1st, International Day of Older Persons, with the "Rio Que Cuida – Baile Viver Bem" (Rio That Cares – Living Well Ball), at the Municipal Club in Tijuca. From 14 pm to 18 pm, attendees of the Community Centers can participate in an afternoon of celebration and fellowship, with ballroom dancing and a performance by the Aeroporto Band.
"The month of October is an opportunity not only to celebrate, but also to reinforce the importance of valuing older people and public policies that promote autonomy, health, social interaction, and participation. We have prepared a program that shows that aging with quality of life also means being active, occupying city spaces, creating bonds, and exercising rights," says Secretary Michel Lima.
The 10 Community Centers will have special programming throughout the month of October, with discussion groups, lectures, recreational activities, and workshops addressing topics such as the rights of the elderly, self-esteem, health, prevention, memory, affection, and healthy aging.
The activities begin on October 1st at Casa Chacrinha, on Ilha do Governador, with a lecture in honor of Senior Citizens Day, breakfast, and a functional fitness class. Throughout the month, all units will host activities. The program in all locations concludes on October 27th at Casa Dercy Gonçalves, in Santa Cruz.
On October 8th, the Decentralized Assembly of the Municipal Council for the Defense of the Rights of the Elderly (COMDEPI-Rio) will be held, starting at 10 am, at the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ). The meeting will include a lecture on “Demography and Aging,” given by Professor Renato Veras, as well as a cultural presentation of the workshop “Traditional French Song,” led by Professor Ilma de Paula Moura Bastos.
The celebrations will also be present in the centers of the Active Life Project. Aimed at people aged 40 and over, the project offers free physical activities and contributes to the promotion of health, well-being, and more active aging.
