The Municipal Department of the Environment, in yet another action to combat irregularities, demolished this Friday (February 19) the beginning of a clandestine subdivision in a Permanent Preservation Area (APP) in Guaratiba, West Zone of Rio. The site had eight illegal, unoccupied buildings and masonry walls intended to enclose land on the banks of Avenida Dom João VI, near an access to the Grota Funda Tunnel. The developers had been committing several environmental crimes, such as clearing vegetation and diverting water courses.

With approximately 30 thousand square meters, the area of the irregular constructions belongs to the municipality and had been expropriated with the aim of widening the roads. Since July 2019, the person responsible for the illegal subdivision had been failing to comply with several embargoes and notifications from the City Hall. Satellite images show that the Olaria River has been completely straightened. A backhoe and workers from the City Hall were used in the operation, which had the support of 25 military police officers.
