Department of the Environment dismantles irregular subdivision in Guaratiba

The Rio de Janeiro City Hall, through the Municipal Department of the Environment, on Monday (July 26) dismantled criminal actions involving the construction of an irregular subdivision in Guaratiba, in the West Zone of Rio. A week ago, the Environmental Patrol had embargoed the earthmoving and gravel removal activities on a 35 square meter plot of land in the buffer zone of the Pedra Branca State Park. As there was a repeat offense, an excavator was seized. Inspectors verified the removal of native vegetation on Rua Caminho da Toca Pequena, which is 2,5 kilometers from the Guaratiba Helicentro.

The operation was supported by the Military Environmental Police. A guardhouse at the condominium – identified as Residencial Namaisterra – was demolished. The structure was located on Estrada do Morgado. According to inspectors, there was an irregular power supply in the subdivision.

– We flew over the area and found that the machine was still operating. We seized the backhoe. We will not allow this type of land division in protected areas – said the Environmental Defense coordinator of the Secretariat, José Maurício Padrone.

The West Zone has been a priority target for actions to combat environmental crimes by the Department of the Environment. Since the beginning of the year, more than 50 actions have been taken. In May, a condominium that was being built illegally in Campo Grande was demolished. The subdivision was being built without any license or authorization from the government, on the slope of Morro do Cabuçu, access to Monte das Oliveiras.

At the site, the agency pointed out several environmental risks such as the suppression of the Atlantic Forest, the filling of a water drainage channel and the movement of earth, subject to landslides.
