Women's Week: free courses help to train women for the job market and empower them

Training for the job market, empowerment, citizenship and encouragement of territorial belonging. These are some of the objectives of the free courses offered by the Secretariat for Women's Policies and Promotion. In honor of International Women's Day, which will be celebrated on Wednesday (8/3), the Rio City Hall website will present, throughout this week, some of the municipal services aimed at women.

The Mulher Cidadã program consists of offering training through short, free courses. It is aimed at women living in situations of social vulnerability.

– The program aims to train women in various topics, through the creation of exchange and learning networks between women in the territories, especially those with the highest rate of violence against women and the lowest human development rates – explained Secretary Joyce Trindade.

According to her, the program takes women from a given region, through the Salas da Mulher Cidadã, workshops on topics that are relevant to the locality, with a focus on women's economic autonomy. In addition, Mulher Cidadã provides advice in the areas of Law, Social Assistance and Psychology, being an important agent of citizenship in the territories.

Short-term free courses include English, braiding, turban weaving, printing, among others. Last year, according to data from the department, 9.395 women were trained by the program.

 

In August 2022, seven new rooms were opened, totaling ten spaces in the city, six in the West Zone, three in the North Zone and one in the central region. The neighborhoods served are: Bangu, Campo Grande, Coelho Neto, Cosmos, Gamboa, Penha, Paciência, Santa Cruz, Sepetiba and Tijuca.

– Since the beginning of the program, more than 10 thousand women have been trained. We have workshops on various topics and we see the need to expand to reach more regions of the city, bringing quality public services to the region where women live – said Joyce.

Casas da Mulher Carioca

The Casas da Mulher Carioca also offers professional training courses exclusively for women. There are around 30 courses available, ranging from beauty courses to computer science and elderly care. More than three thousand women have taken courses at the houses in the last two years.

– After the pandemic, the economic crisis that shook the world hit women, especially mothers, hard. We saw the need to get women back into the job market. The courses provide this in a short space of time. They are all free, with several options and schedules. The first time we opened the vacancies, more than 25 thousand women signed up. This shows the need to help women return to work – said Joyce Trindade.
