Super Center uses Artificial Intelligence in breast cancer diagnostics

The Super Centro Carioca de Saúde now has the support of artificial intelligence (AI) to assist in the diagnosis of breast cancer, being a pioneer in the Unified Health System. The reports of mammogram exams performed at the Centro Carioca de Diagnóstico e Tratamento por Imagem (CCDTI) are evaluated and signed by qualified medical professionals, however, AI helps to identify possible lesions that are difficult for the professional to see. With the new technology, the unit reduces the time to diagnose the disease and increases the chance of treatment and cure.

– Artificial intelligence will not finalize the patient’s diagnosis, it will help identify lesions, taking only 20 seconds. This greatly helps reduce the time it takes to diagnose the disease. Once the lesions are identified, the doctor will take into account, or not, what was identified and finalize the diagnosis. AI is a technology that helps identify lesions more quickly, and perhaps something that the doctor cannot identify with the naked eye. This is certainly a major advance for public health in Rio,” explains the municipal health secretary, Daniel Soranz.

 

AI assists in what is called a “critical finding,” that is, it identifies injuries and indicates the severity of each one. The medical professional evaluating the exam may or may not consider the injury indicated by AI, according to the patient’s medical history and follow-up. The reports, even after the AI ​​has indicated them, are evaluated and closed by the professional. Artificial intelligence is merely a technological tool to support and subsidize the diagnostic capacity of professionals who already work in the unit.

 

The CCDTI also has a breast cancer navigation project, with a specialized team that monitors the exams of patients undergoing diagnostic investigation of the disease. The goal is to ensure that patients treated at the unit who present any type of alteration have a closed diagnosis more quickly through a biopsy exam. After the diagnosis is completed, the team notifies the patient's reference Primary Care unit to provide the necessary follow-up in the regulatory system to begin treatment.

 

In the city of Rio, women with indications for routine breast cancer screening defined by the Ministry of Health protocol are scheduled at SISREG for a mammogram exam within 34 days. For patients undergoing diagnostic investigation for any suspected disease, the waiting time drops to 25 days. The SMS has a total of 12 service providers (own or contracted units) and provides more than 100 slots for the procedure per year. Since its inauguration in February 2023, the CCDTI alone has performed 41.161 mammogram exams.

 

When identifying the development of breast cancer, it is essential to observe signs such as a lump in the breast or armpit, swelling or pain in the breast region, inversion, secretion or flaking of the nipple and skin that looks wrinkled, red or irritated. These are some essential indicators and the recommendation is to seek a health unit for the appropriate guidance and requests for exams. In the SUS, exams such as mammography, ultrasound and biopsy are offered for prevention and early diagnosis of patients in the network.
