- Operation at a street market in Cachambi cracks down on illegal wiring and sidewalk obstructions.
Enforcement action conducted by the Subprefecture of the North Zone II and the Secretariat of Public Order - Press Release More than 170 educational notices were distributed to curb the practice of tying wires from stalls directly to power poles at the Basílio de Brito Street Fair in Cachambi. The enforcement actions conducted by the North Zone II Subprefecture and the Public Order Secretariat (Seop) throughout June also resulted in dozens of sidewalks being cleared. The main focus was to eliminate potential risks of accidents and fires caused by irregular wiring and to restore pedestrian circulation space. In total, the teams inspected approximately 400 vendors in four major operations and one technical inspection.
In addition to the 170 warning notices issued regarding the prohibition of tying wires from stalls to the electrical grid, agents issued individual notices and demanded immediate adjustments from 14 stalls that were blocking the street. The interventions were carried out by the Fair Coordination Office of the Municipal Secretariat of Public Order (Seop), with the support of the Municipal Guard (GM). Of the irregularities corrected by the stallholders, nine involved non-standard wiring and five involved sidewalks completely blocked by merchandise, chairs, and other objects that impeded passage.
"The work of regulating [the markets] is ongoing and seeks to reconcile the full functioning of the open-air markets, which are fundamental to the local economy, with respect for public space and the rights of those who live in the region. We will continue to provide guidance, conduct inspections, and promote the necessary adjustments to ensure greater organization, safety, and accessibility," stated the sub-mayor of the North Zone II, Douglas Araújo.
The schedule of inspections in the region will continue uninterrupted in the coming weeks.
