- Urban planning: special action by City Hall to curb irregular sale of hot meals in Barra da Tijuca
A joint operation between SEOP and tax inspectors resulted in the seizure of 115 meals and the taking of two men to the police station. The pair tried to evade inspection. Photo: Disclosure/SEOP The Rio de Janeiro City Hall, through the Municipal Department of Public Order (SEOP), carried out a special ordering action on Wednesday, December 02, to inspect businesses, including the illegal sale of hot meals, on streets in Barra da Tijuca, in the West Zone. As a result, inspectors from the Municipal Department of Finance inspected 12 street vendors and seized 33 items, including 201 packages of meals, without origin and sold without the necessary storage conditions. The agents covered the entire area known as Península and also monitored traffic and additional passenger transportation, carried out by vans and kombis.
During the operation, two men were taken to the 16th Police Precinct (Barra da Tijuca) after trying to evade inspection. The pair were selling hot meals in a car and, whenever the team approached, they would leave the location. During the second attempt to stop them, the vehicle sped off, climbing onto the sidewalk and disobeying the order to stop, but was caught by military police officers from the 31st BPM who were part of the convoy. The street vendor (driver of the vehicle) and his assistant did not have any documents on hand and were taken to the police station for questioning.
Inside the vehicle, plastic tables and chairs, a tent, and lunch boxes without any preparation or authorization for sale were found. The vehicle was taken to the City Hall warehouse in Recreio dos Bandeirantes, and the driver was fined for driving dangerously on public roads and not having a driver's license or vehicle registration.

With planning and integration by the Subsecretariat of Operations (Subop) of the Seop, the action included personnel from the Municipal Guard and the Parking and Towing Inspection (Cfer) and Special Complementary Transportation (CETC) coordinators, which are part of the structure of the secretariat itself. The task force also brought together agents from the Urban Control Coordination (CCU), an agency of the Municipal Finance Department that inspects street vendors; from Comlurb; and from the Military Police.
