The Department of Public Order, with support from the Military Police and the Civil Police, carried out an orderly operation this Sunday, the 28th, to ensure compliance with the decree published last Tuesday, the 23rd, by the City of Rio, which prohibited the operation of the Acari Fair. In the operation, the Department of Public Order and the Municipal Guard worked with 160 officers to prevent the fair from taking place and to curb other irregularities in the region, such as illegal parking. The Military Police employed officers from the 9th BPM (Rocha Miranda), 41st BPM (Irajá), the Expressway Policing Battalion (BPVE) and the Shock Police Battalion (BPChq) to ensure the safety of municipal officers, since the region is influenced by armed organized crime, thus maintaining stability during the work.

– The operation we carried out today in Acari is a preventive occupation of the place where the fair usually takes place, which is prohibited and illegal. An undue occupation of public space that the Public Order Department, through its intelligence unit, mapped, including sales of products resulting from cargo theft. Anyway, this fact has already been shared with the police. So, we occupied here since early morning, and we will continue throughout the day precisely to prevent the fair from happening, thus enforcing the decree of Mayor Eduardo Paes that prohibited the fair – emphasized the Public Order Secretary, Brenno Carnevale.

During the operation, SEOP agents demolished two fixed structures with roofs that were illegally occupying the sidewalk and seven more precarious structures that served as housing under the overpass. Two notifications were made in a trailer, with a bathroom, and an ice warehouse, all located on the public sidewalk, obstructing the road. Six illegal electricity connections and one water connection were also cut. The team disabled four surveillance cameras used by organized crime, 14 sockets were removed and two command centers were broken. Approximately 200 meters of wires and cables that were being used to steal electricity were removed. In all, five vehicles were towed, including two motorcycles for riding on the Acari Fazenda Botafogo subway walkway. A driver, who was drunk and disrespected the agents, was taken to the 39th Police Precinct. In addition, a man was arrested by police for having a stolen motorcycle and another citizen was detained for evading the police station with an arrest warrant for drug trafficking and robbery. Comlurb agents removed three tons of waste.

– In this action we can highlight three important factors in the process of improving public safety in our state. Integration of public bodies; organization; and, repression of cargo theft – highlighted the Secretary of State for the Military Police, Colonel Luiz Henrique Pires.

Around 50 civil police officers participated in the action, including district agents, specialized police stations and experts from the Carlos Éboli Criminalistics Institute.

– It is important to ratify the integration between institutions, the partnership between the State Government and the City Hall with the aim of controlling, preventing and monitoring any type of illegality. The Civil Police has ongoing investigations to determine the origin of the goods, as well as the relationship between local businesses and criminal organizations, to identify and hold those involved accountable – highlighted the State Secretary of Civil Police, delegate Marcus Amim.

The Municipal Guard used bulletproof vests that were delivered to the corporation this week in the operation. Agents from Comlurb, Águas do Rio, Light, the Department of Animal Protection and Defense, the Department of Social Assistance and Rioluz also participated in the operation.

Decree banned the Acari Fair

Mayor Eduardo Paes' decision to prohibit the Acari Fair was based on an intelligence report produced by SEOP, which demonstrated several irregularities at the fair, such as the sale of stolen goods, contraband and unproven origins, as well as the illegal occupation of public areas. The document found illegal sales of household appliances, electronic devices, medicines, wild animals, food without proper packaging, and clothing from department stores at half the price shown on the labels.
