Demolition of an irregularly constructed three-story building - Fábio Costa/Seop

The Public Order Department (SEOP) began demolishing a three-story building constructed illegally in the Portão Vermelho neighborhood of Rocinha, an area heavily influenced by organized crime, on Thursday, the 30th. The construction work did not have any license or authorization from the City Hall and is located on a hillside, which could pose a risk of collapse in the event of heavy rain. City Hall engineers estimate that the damage to those responsible will amount to R$2 million.

The operations began on the top floor, which is in the structural and masonry phase. The first two floors already have people living there. The families were assisted by the Department of Social Welfare. During the operation, the agents found a faucet nozzle embedded in the wall to give the impression that there was already a plumbing installation in the property and to make it appear to the agents that people were already living there.

– Once again, we have carried out an operation to demolish irregular buildings in Rocinha. We have already worked here several times and will continue to curb this illegal practice, with the aim of preserving people's lives, organizing the city and assisting public security forces in combating organized crime – reinforces the Secretary of Public Order, Brenno Carnevale.

The agents also demolished the structures and foundations of additions to another building that is being built along the slope of the land, with two blocks already built, one with five floors, in which the structures of the sixth will be demolished, and another with two floors, with the units already inhabited. This type of construction is also done to make inspections more difficult, since only one floor is built at street level, with the others being staggered down the slope of the land.

The foundations and a base of the third block, which is already leaning against the site's containment barrier, were also demolished.
