Rio City Hall delivers renovated Ramos Swimming Pool

The Carlos de Oliveira Dicró Ramos Beach Environmental Park underwent its biggest renovation in ten years - Marcos de Paula/City of Rio

On the day of Saint Sebastian (20/1), the patron saint of Rio, the City Hall handed over the revitalization of the Piscinão de Ramos, in the North Zone. This is the largest revitalization of the Ramos Carlos de Oliveira Dicró Beach Environmental Park in ten years. The Parks and Gardens Foundation (FPJ) installed sports equipment for the public to use around the pool, totaling a new leisure area of ​​124 thousand square meters.

– It’s great that we can have this space restored and see things improving. And we will be vigilant, keeping an eye on how to ensure that this restoration is maintained. This depends on the City Hall, but also on you. The money that was spent here comes from the taxes that you pay. Take care of it, be kind to this place – said Mayor Eduardo Paes.

The interventions included the construction of multi-sports courts, a sand court, an artificial grass field, new playgrounds and equipment for senior citizens, a multipurpose space, common areas, landscaping, as well as the revitalization of the grandstand, cycle path, skate park and bathroom renovation. The investment was R$2,9 million.

– Today, the City Hall is delivering more leisure options to the region’s population, with new equipment and an administrative headquarters to better organize the space – said the president of FPJ, Roberto Oliveira.

With a maximum depth of 1,40m, Piscinão de Ramos is a leisure area built in the early 2000s and consisting of an artificial beach around a public saltwater pool. Today, Piscinão de Ramos is one of the symbols of the suburbs of Rio de Janeiro, even serving as a set for television productions.

– The renovation of the Piscinão de Ramos park is very important for the North Zone. And not only the pool, which is very symbolic, but also this entire complex. So, we are creating our own Madureira Park in the Leopoldina Zone. We intend to transform the park, now during the summer, into a large concert area. We want it to be a reference point equal to Madureira Park – declared the deputy mayor of the North Zone, Diego Vaz.

The park once received 80 people per day. The lake is supplied with 30 million liters of water from Guanabara Bay, which are pumped daily to the Ramos Water Treatment Plant. The plant's operation is overseen by the Rio-Águas Foundation and the water quality is monitored.

– The leisure options have improved a lot. This renovation has created a leisure area for children and adults. This work was very welcome and I, as a user, hope that the community preserves the space – said retiree Flavio Freire, 65.
