Young Citizen Carioca: City Attorney's Office and Education Department promote second edition of the project

The Rio de Janeiro City Attorney's Office and the Municipal Department of Education are launching the 5nd edition of the Young Citizen of Rio de Janeiro contest this Tuesday (3/2). The initiative is in line with the Municipal Digital Inclusion Policy and will award prizes to the 33 best works written by 9th grade students from each Regional Education Coordination Office.

This year, the chosen theme was “Education of rights as an instrument of citizenship” and it will begin to be worked on this Tuesday in the classrooms of the municipal network, with the aim of stimulating the production of texts and diversifying pedagogical practice, through stimulating the sensitivity and creativity of students.

– The education of our students goes beyond what is taught in the classroom. We want to educate citizens who know their roles as citizens and who are examples of integrity. That is why holding the competition is so important – stated the Secretary of Education, Renan Ferreirinha.

Students in the 9th grade of Elementary School II who must be enrolled in municipal public school units may participate in the contest. The essays will be written in class, corrected and selected by a specific committee. Among the criteria considered for the selection of texts are creativity, originality and vocabulary, among others.

For Attorney General Daniel Bucar, the competition, which will award winning students with smartphones and diplomas, will also encourage the appreciation of fundamental rights in the Constitution.

– This second edition of the competition will also be a way for us to address fundamental rights with young people, such as equality, non-discrimination, freedom and, above all, the exercise of citizenship – added the attorney general.

The winning essays will be announced in June. The notice with the contest rules is available on the websites of the Rio de Janeiro City Attorney's Office and the Municipal Department of Education.
