City Hall inaugurates Carioca Cultural Heritage plaque at Boteco Belmonte, in Flamengo

By placing an information board, the City Hall selects prominent locations for each theme - Disclosure Known for its famous open-faced empadinhas that circulate on waiters' trays, the Belmonte do Flamengo bar is the newest bar to receive a plaque of Carioca Cultural Heritage. This Saturday (July 1), Mayor Eduardo Paes presented the plaque to the establishment, which was the first in the Belmonte bar chain.
The bar, located on Flamengo Beach, was purchased in 2002 by former waiter Antônio Rodrigues from Ceará, who renovated the traditional bar. With the award of the plaque, Belmonte is now part of the Circuito dos Botequins, which aims to identify characteristic and traditional bohemian places, affirming the significance of these places for Rio's culture. Belmonte do Flamengo is the 35th to appear on this list, which includes traditional bars such as Bar da Portuguesa, Casa Paladino, Bar do Momo and Adega Pérola.
The work of identifying the city's cultural heritage is carried out by the Rio Heritage Institute (IRPH), an agency linked to the Municipal Department of Urban Planning (SMPU). The famous blue plaques identifying assets and sites began to be installed in 1992, but since 2010, the Rio Cultural Heritage Circuits have been organized by theme. The circuits are no longer focused on architecture and now cover free themes linked to Rio's culture and identity.
– This project has been around since the 90s, but it was only in 2010 that we started to create circuits by theme, identifying places of Rio de Janeiro culture. In this sense, we have the Circuito dos Botequins, and Belmonte was identified as a traditional bohemian location – said Laura Di Blasi, president of IRPH.
By placing an informational plaque, the City Hall selects prominent locations for each theme. On each plaque, visitors can learn a little more about the location and its importance to the city's history and the theme in question. There are currently 22 circuits with cultural assets spread throughout the city. Among the circuits are: Literature, Freedom, Art Deco, Cinemas, Train, Bars, Water, Samba, Bossa Nova, Tiradentes Square, African Heritage, Choro, Traditional Businesses and others.
