Mayor Eduardo Paes and the Secretary of Policies and Promotion of Women, Joyce Trindade, launched, this Tuesday (18/1), the Cartão Mulher Carioca, which grants financial aid in the amount of R$400 to women in situations of domestic violence and social vulnerability who are assisted by the network for combating violence in the city of Rio de Janeiro. In this first phase, 80 will receive the card. In total, 500 cards will be made available.

– We are increasingly creating specific policies. We know that violence against women is a serious problem in our society, and that it has increased during the pandemic. The City Hall has increasingly sought to establish public policies to help these women – said the mayor of Rio, during the ceremony held at the Chiquinha Gonzaga Specialized Women’s Care Center, in Praça Onze.

The aid will be available for up to six months, extendable for another 90 days. For the benefit to be renewed, an assessment will be made by the municipality's technical team that monitors the cases in the response network.

– It is great to be able to launch something so fundamental for the development and emancipation of women in Rio de Janeiro. Violence is something that keeps many women out of the job market and prevents them from achieving financial independence. Providing this aid is a response to ensure that they can secure their income and, from there, escape this cycle of violence – said Secretary Joyce Trindade.

Now a teacher at Casa da Mulher Carioca and working as a model, actress and artistic director, Rogéria Cardeal shared her experience as a former victim of domestic violence.

– Being here today is a dream come true for me. Because escaping from a situation of violence and now working at Casa da Mulher Carioca is very important and I feel very happy about it. The Specialized Center for Women's Care saved my life. I am 42 years old and have two children who also escaped from situations of violence and abuse. Today, Rogéria, who received quality treatment at CEAM, sees the emergence of a program that will help women – said Rogéria, who is president of the Union of Professional Models of the State of Rio de Janeiro.

In addition to the Cartão Mulher Carioca, the Women's Secretariat already provides public transportation cards for women who suffer domestic violence, the Move-Mulher. Each card has a R$24,30 charge for up to six bus tickets. In 2021, the City Hall began distributing 1.950 cards.

The Women's Secretariat has four facilities for assisting women in Rio de Janeiro, which are two Casas da Mulher Carioca; CEAM Chiquinha Gonzaga, an exclusive service location for women in situations of domestic violence; and Casa Viva Mulher Cora Coralina, which is a confidential shelter for women at imminent risk of death.

Anyone can help a woman who is experiencing domestic violence. If someone witnesses an attack, it is important to call the Military Police on 190. To report situations of violence, citizens can call 180 and the Citizen Service Center on 1746.
