Beneficiary receives the 500th Mulher Carioca Card - Beth Santos / Rio City Hall The City of Rio, through the Secretariat for Women's Policies and Promotion, delivered the 07th Cartão Mulher Carioca this Wednesday (06/500). Emergency financial aid for those in situations of violence and vulnerability, it has been available to city residents since January 2022. More than 1.500 people were impacted by this service, as many of the beneficiaries have one or more children.
The 500th Cartão Mulher Carioca was delivered by Mayor Eduardo Paes to a woman assisted by the Specialized Center for Assistance to Women in Situations of Violence (NEAM), located at the Casa da Mulher Carioca Elza Soares, in Padre Miguel. To date, more than R$1,5 million has been invested in maintaining the service. The estimated expenditure until the end of 2024 is more than R$3 million.
The card has a credit of R$500, which can be used for purchases at any establishment. The aid is available for up to six months, and the period can be extended for another 90 days. The program was sanctioned as law in January 2023.
To receive the aid, you must be a resident of the city of Rio de Janeiro and be served by one of the organizations that combat violence against women in the city. The program was created based on the understanding that financial stability is essential for victims to be able to separate themselves from their aggressors and have the security to move forward with their cases.
Among the women who received the card is a woman who was held in private prison for 17 years, along with her two children, in Guaratiba, in the West Zone of Rio. The victim, who suffered physical and psychological violence, began receiving financial assistance, as well as psychological and legal support, when she was rescued, and now lives independently with her children.
