To honor singer Elza Soares, who would have celebrated her birthday on the 23rd of this month, the Secretariat for Women's Policies and Promotion organized a tribute to the artist this Tuesday (27/06), at the Casa da Mulher Carioca, named after the star, who passed away in January of last year.
The event featured a roundtable discussion with music and a screening of the singer's documentary, reinforcing her entire struggle and life story. The Secretary for Women, Joyce Trindade, was present at the event, along with those assisted by the Casa da Mulher Carioca Elza Soares.
According to the secretary, Elza Soares' legacy is eternal, and her life inspired many women:
– I am proud and honored to have inaugurated a facility, through the Women's Secretariat, which bears your name and works on behalf of so many women, our Casa da Mulher Carioca Elza Soares.
The name of the Casa da Mulher Carioca Elza Soares is a tribute to the singer, who was born and raised in Padre Miguel. Elza has become a symbol of resistance to domestic violence and racial and social prejudices. The Casa da Mulher Carioca Elza Soares was inaugurated in October 2022 and offers free training courses and workshops, as well as psychological care and legal guidance for women in situations of domestic violence.
The Casa da Mulher Carioca Elza Soares is one of three maintained by the City of Rio. The houses are facilities for sheltering, combating violence against women and training women to return to the job market and to become entrepreneurs.
In addition to Casa Elza, in Padre Miguel, the Women's Secretariat maintains one in Madureira, Casa da Mulher Carioca Tia Doca, and another in Realengo, which is Casa da Mulher Carioca Dinah Coutinho.
From 2021 to date, more than 180 women have been assisted and have gone through the facilities of the Women's Secretariat, to break the cycle of violence. With the Cartão Mulher Carioca (emergency financial aid) alone, more than R$1,5 million was invested to maintain the service. The estimated expenditure until the end of 2024 is more than R$3 million.
