Rio City Hall project creates new pedagogical tools for literacy in the municipal education network

The City of Rio, through MultiRio, is launching a project to improve the literacy process in schools. The Municipal Education Network will gain a new tool to stimulate creativity, logical reasoning and narrative skills in children. Starting on the 21st, “Meias Aventuras” will be on the scene, with the launch of its website, hosted on the municipal company’s portal (www.multirio.rj.gov.br).
The multiplatform project begins with a digital format only, but other physical media will be incorporated. The website comes with animations, booklets, illustrations, templates storyboard, coloring pages and games to develop the ability of students between 6 and 7 years old to create stories. With the help of those responsible, it can already be a valuable educational tool to be used at home, especially for those in the 1st year of elementary school.
For the launch, a live,, broadcast on the company's YouTube channel (www.youtube.com/user/MULTIRIOSME), at 14 pm next Monday (21), anticipating part of the activities of Literacy Week (between September 23 and 25). The chat will be led by the director of the Graphic Arts and Animation Center (Nagan) of MultiRio, Marcelo Salerno, and by the teacher and Pedagogical Articulation of the Company Ana Cristian Veneno. The conversation will feature the participation of the puppet theater director, Miguel Vellinho, who provided consultancy to “Meias Aventuras”.
The project stars a fun and clumsy character who goes through various everyday situations in which he has to overcome challenges. He is a sock with human features, created by the MultiRio team. He was born adapted to the pandemic and even wore a mask in one of the animations produced, to encourage prevention against the new coronavirus.
Through the website, in addition to watching these animated films, children will learn to create their own stories at home and in the classroom in the future. The idea is that using simple, easily available materials, the inventive potential of puppet theater can be explored. A common sock can be used as the first step in putting together these little shows with the help of parents and siblings.

The puppet is easy to make: just find a sock, leftover materials to be reused such as pieces of cloth, wool, markers, threads, colored paper and new stories will be told and other adventures can make children learn while playing.
All project resources will be made available by MultiRio on the website so that students, teachers and family members can access, learn about, play and download all tutorials and teaching materials, even at home: these include Meia's messy stories to watch, PDFs with instructions on puppet theater, how to create scenarios, characters and their own narratives. Thus, the project is inspired by the General Competencies of the National Curricular Base (BNCC) and seeks to contribute to the teaching and learning processes of children in the literacy phase, developing the abilities to watch, listen, tell, interpret, read and create stories.
By following the instructions and using creativity, any child can begin to develop their oral skills, vocabulary and logical-mathematical reasoning. In addition to introducing students to numbers, the “Half Adventures” project seeks to create familiarity with geometric shapes, the number line and other basic mathematical concepts.
Kit will be distributed to schools
The project, which involved several departments of MultiRio, will have further developments. As soon as in-person classes resume, municipal schools will receive a kit so that literacy teachers can develop activities in the classroom with their students. In addition to the socks, the teacher will be able to use various materials to set up a real stage and dressing room for storytelling. They will also receive a flash drive with digital content that will allow them to store work done by students, in addition to other films, games and learning objects that MultiRio intends to create. The kit also consists of two game boards.
The goal is to prepare children to make better use of existing literacy methods, without interfering with the preferences adopted by teachers. With greater ease in storytelling and problem-solving, they will be better prepared for any type of task that is normally applied at this stage.
