- Construction work on the Rosa Magalhães Samba Factory continues in the area of the former Leopoldina Station.
The Samba Factory will bring together 14 warehouses to house the Série Ouro samba schools - Marcelo PIu/Prefeitura do Rio Rio Mayor Eduardo Paes visited the construction site of the Rosa Magalhães Samba Factory in São Cristóvão, North Zone, on Tuesday afternoon (21/10). Located on Rua Francisco Eugênio, near the old Leopoldina Station, the new space will house 14 warehouses to house the Série Ouro samba schools, as well as offering leisure, event and social areas for the entire population.
"It's impressive how far the project has progressed. The construction method shows that we should begin vacating the first warehouses by the middle of next year. Many of these schools are in precarious conditions, in various dilapidated warehouses, many threatened with eviction. Therefore, the Samba Factory is important for improving Carnival and the working conditions of the samba schools," said Eduardo Paes, accompanied by Deputy Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere.
Five warehouses, 5 through 9, are under construction. Excavations have already been completed to prepare the site and begin laying the foundations. In warehouses 6 and 7, teams are assembling the formwork for the girders, while in warehouse 9, the foundation for the pillars is being leveled.
In warehouse 8, precast installation is progressing, and welding of the metal structures continues in warehouses 5 through 8. Assembly of the beams in warehouse 6 is also underway. So far, 378 of the 728 piles forming the foundations of the warehouses have been completed.
– The idea is that, as the warehouses are ready, the schools will occupy them, ensuring that by Carnival 2027 the schools in the access group are well installed – said the mayor of Rio.
Each of the 14 warehouses of the Série Ouro samba schools will have approximately 1,6 square meters and will be equipped with painting and resin workshops, sewing studios and storage for costumes and sculptures, as well as an area for modeling floats.
The ground floor will serve as a garage for up to four floats per school, the first floor will house the cafeteria, and the second floor will be used for costume and prop production. The project also includes a one-ton freight elevator, a passenger elevator, restrooms, locker rooms, a cafeteria, and a fire suppression system.
In addition to the warehouses, the 33-square-meter complex will feature an events plaza with a stage, kiosks, seating areas, and an administrative building. Sustainable and modern, the complex will feature natural ventilation, overhead lighting (natural light), and the installation of photovoltaic panels, which will generate part of the complex's electricity.
"We're progressing at a very good pace. There's a lot of foundation work involved, and sometimes it takes a while for the pillars and metal structure to be completed. The challenge is significant; in addition to the warehouses, we have an entire urban development project to complete. We'll work hard to deliver," emphasized Infrastructure Secretary Wanderson Santos, who manages the department responsible for the Municipal Urbanization Company (Rio-Urbe), which is executing the project.
