Rio de Janeiro City Hall delivers the first tunnels with new LED lighting

The modernization of the lighting in the Zuzu Angel and Rafael Mascarenhas Tunnels, the first to be included in Luz Maravilha – a public-private partnership for public lighting, signed by the city of Rio – was completed last week. In total, 1.300 LED projectors were installed in the two tunnels that connect Gávea to São Conrado. More than 73 drivers who travel through there daily will benefit from the new lighting.

 

– The modernization of Zuzu Angel and Rafael Mascarenhas are proof of the success of the program. The tunnels, in particular, are a good example of the new and powerful LED lighting, and are also where the biggest difference can be seen compared to the old yellow lights – says Pierre Batista, president of Rioluz.

 

An important feature of this project is the arrangement of the LEDs, with three rows of lights at the entrance, which become one as the tunnel progresses. This reduces the impact of light during the day, so that drivers do not feel a sudden difference between the inside and outside of the tunnels.

In addition to Zuzu Angel and Rafael Mascarenhas, more than 17 tunnels will receive modern LED lighting in the city. Among them are Santa Bárbara and Noel Rosa. The works are scheduled to be completed by the end of 2022. The revitalization of the lighting in the city's tunnels is part of the PPP and aims to modernize all 450 public lighting points in the city.

The partnership also includes the implementation of services within the Smart City concept, with the installation of 10 security cameras, 40% of which will feature facial recognition technology; 5.000 Wi-Fi points; and 10.000 sensors, including traffic and rain control.
