Luz Maravilha Program advances on the streets of Rio and reaches the mark of 75% of the city in LED

The Luz Maravilha program, implemented by the City of Rio through Rioluz in consortium with the company Smartluz, has just reached the 75% mark of the initial target established by the Public-Private Partnership (PPP), which foresees the replacement of 450 thousand street lights with LEDs in the entire public lighting system of the city by the end of 2022. So far, Rioluz has already installed 336.493 LED lights in the city.

The 24 kilometers of Barra da Tijuca beachfront, including Recreio dos Bandeirantes, are now equipped with LED lighting. Rioluz replaced 1.547 yellow light points with new bulbs and installed 899 new reflectors on the sandbank. Due to the sea spray in the area, Rioluz replaced 367 steel posts with new fiberglass posts, which are more durable and resistant to the elements.

Along the Barra beach, there were 310 LED projectors, 542 lights and 27 posts. On the boardwalk of Avenida Lúcio Costa, each kiosk had at least two new white light points added to it and, to top it off, the reflectors on the sand were also replaced with more powerful and durable lights. With the brighter lighting, activities on the sand can also be done at night.

 

– The Luz Maravilha Program benefits residents’ daily lives. The streets become brighter and, consequently, invite people to participate in nighttime activities. The delivery of the Barra da Tijuca waterfront to Recreio is another big step towards the goal of making the entire Rio illuminated and more beautiful – highlights the president of Rioluz, Paulo Cezar dos Santos.

 

Another new feature for local residents is that Gigóia Island, which is close to the Jardim Oceânico subway station, is now completely equipped with LED lighting, with 113 modernized light points. The project also brought unprecedented lighting to the Quebra-mar pier in Barra da Tijuca, which opened in April of this year. For the first time, the pier is completely lit up to the tip, where many people like to go to enjoy the sea, in addition to being a place used by fishermen.

Near the breakwater is another point in Barra, Praia do Pepê, a famous kiosk that attracts many swimmers. In that stretch, 22 posts, 175 projectors and 70 LED lights were installed. Leaving Barra and heading towards Recreio beach, Rioluz installed 290 projectors, 489 lights and 57 posts. On Macumba beach, 196 lights and 98 posts were installed. Next comes Sernambetiba beach with 72 projectors, 42 new lights and 54 posts. On Pontal, there were 52 projectors and 4 posts.

In the Reserva area, Rioluz installed 171 LED lights and installed 21 more streetlights. As there is a section that cannot be lit because it is an environmental preservation area, CET-Rio carried out signaling work on the roads by painting the lanes so that drivers can follow the cat's eyes placed on the asphalt.

 

– Luz Maravilha is a boost to the safety of our region. The more powerful lighting provides more comfort for drivers and makes the roads safer for pedestrians. And now, with the new beach floodlights, residents and visitors will be able to enjoy more time on the beachfront. In addition to safety, we encourage leisure and sports, and these are the benefits generated by the new public lighting – says the Deputy Mayor of Barra, Recreio and Vargens, Raphael Lima.

 

The Luz Maravilha Program has already reached all regions of Rio de Janeiro simultaneously. Major roads and avenues have already been covered, such as the Linha Vermelha, Presidente Vargas in the city center, the Cachamorra and Magarça roads in Campo Grande, Av. Brás de Pina in Vista Alegre, and the Maracanã region in greater Tijuca. In the South Zone, the Lagoa Barra Highway and the Vieira Souto and Nossa Senhora de Copacabana avenues are also equipped with LED lighting.

The first communities to receive 100% LED lighting were the Alemão and Penha complexes, in the North Zone. Rioluz has also modernized eleven of the nineteen tunnels planned in the program.

From the hills to the asphalt, you can see how Rio is brighter and more beautiful with the Luz Maravilha program, which is replacing all the city's old lighting with LEDs. In addition to revitalizing public spaces and beautifying the city's appearance, illuminated streets contribute to public safety, preventing crimes and reducing crime.
