Luz Maravilha Program begins installing 1.500 new LED lights in Rocinha

One of the largest favelas in Latin America is getting new lighting. The city government, through Rioluz, has started installing 1.500 new LED street lights in Rocinha. The initiative is part of Luz Maravilha, a public-private partnership that will modernize the city's entire public lighting system by 2022, with 450 points. The program will benefit approximately 70 residents in the community.

Since the beginning of January, Rioluz has been reviewing the Luz Maravilha schedule and one of the criteria used to implement the program is the Human Development Index (HDI). Rocinha has an HDI of 0,732, considered one of the lowest in the city, even though it is in an upper middle class region, which marks a profound urban contrast in the region's landscape. Other criteria analyzed for the installation of new street lights are crime rates, the rate of lamps being turned off and regions with greater social vulnerability.

– This delivery is only possible because we prioritize the most deprived areas of the city, giving priority to those who need it most. The modernization of such a symbolic location is a sign of the commitment of the City of Rio to the people of Rio – declared the president of Rioluz, Bruno Bonetti.

– There are already more than 25 thousand street lights installed in the city. Lighting up Rocinha is restoring self-esteem and bringing more security to this large community – said the Secretary of Infrastructure, Katia Souza.

The Luz Maravilha program also includes the modernization of all Rioluz streetlights, which represent 15% of the existing streetlights in the city.

The public-private partnership includes the implementation of services within the smart city concept, with the installation of 10 security cameras, 40% of which will feature facial recognition technology; five thousand Wi-Fi hotspots; four thousand solid waste sensors in manholes; and six thousand traffic signal sensors, which will improve traffic flow.
