Luz Maravilha: Túnel Velho, which connects Botafogo to Copacabana, becomes more modern with LED lamps

The Old Tunnel has been given modern lighting with LED lamps - Marcos de Paula/City Hall of Rio As part of the project to revitalize the lighting of the city's 19 tunnels, as part of the Luz Maravilha program, Rioluz has completed work on the Alaor Prata Tunnel, known to locals as the Old Tunnel. The road that connects Botafogo to Copacabana has had its lighting completely modernized. The 197 old sodium vapor lamps have been replaced with modern LED lights.
– The old nomenclature is really a thing of the past. The Alaor Prata tunnel has been given a light bath and drivers will soon notice the difference. Rioluz will transform the city’s 19 tunnels into 100% LED by the end of September – says Rioluz president Pierre Batista.
After completing the modernization of the two galleries of the Rebouças and Santa Bárbara Tunnels, the Luz Maravilha program is moving forward with other important stages of its tunnel schedule. Work to modernize the lighting of the Noel Rosa Tunnel, an important connecting road between the neighborhoods of Vila Isabel and Riachuelo, in the North Zone of the city, has already begun and is expected to be completed by the end of March.
The Zuzu Angel and Rafael Mascarenhas tunnels, which connect Gávea to São Conrado, were the first to be delivered by Rioluz, at the end of October. The modernization of its 1.300 projectors benefits more than 73 thousand drivers who travel through the area daily. Meanwhile, the Joá Tunnel, which has had its lower section 100% LED since the end of December, had 360 lights replaced. The same happened with the São Conrado/Pepino Tunnel, which had its lower section lighting completed at the same time, with 369 points modernized.
This month, the Luz Maravilha program surpassed the mark of 250 thousand light points installed throughout the city, surpassing 55% of the initial goal established by the City Hall's Public-Private Partnership (PPP), which foresees the modernization of the city's entire public lighting system by September of this year. The goal is to modernize 450 thousand light points with LED technology luminaires. In addition to revitalizing public spaces and making streets brighter and safer, the program will generate savings of more than R$ 100 million for the public coffers in 2022 alone.
