- Rioluz replaces copper cables with aluminum on the Red Line to curb acts of vandalism
The Red Line illuminated - Fábio Motta/City of Rio During the month of July, Rioluz will replace eight kilometers of copper cables with aluminum on the Linha Vermelha. This is yet another attempt by the Rio City Hall's public lighting PPP to curb the constant robberies on the road.
– In partnership with Smartluz, we are developing solutions to mitigate acts of vandalism in the city. We are using materials with lower commercial value, for example. A meter of copper cable can cost up to four times more than aluminum cable on the market – explains Rioluz president Paulo Cezar dos Santos.
In the first half of this year alone, the subconcessionaire sent maintenance teams 290 times to repair thefts on the Linha Vermelha highway. Since the beginning of the year, when the PPP concreted the cable junction boxes at some points on the expressway, criminals have started targeting overhead wiring, causing losses of R$112 to the public coffers. The costs caused by thefts in the city have more than doubled. According to SmartLuz, losses jumped from R$250 in May to R$504 in June just from repairs to the thefts of 29 meters of cables and 111 LED lights stolen from the public lighting system.
