Orla do Rio wins the Praia Circular project that will encourage the reduction of plastic consumption

The Praia Circular project is coming to Rio de Janeiro's coastline with the aim of encouraging a reduction in plastic consumption and sustainable tourism in the city. The idea is to engage business partners, including those who work on the sands, to adopt good practices and new business models based on reducing the use and replacing this material. The collection of this waste will also be expanded, for correct recycling.

The pilot project is in operation at Posto 4, on Copacabana Beach. A smartly managed machine has been installed at the site, which provides cold drinking water to prevent locals and tourists from consuming the product in disposable plastic bottles. Users will be able to fill their utensils with quality liquid, certified by Inmetro, paying R$1 for every 500ml.

The project is expected to arrive at Posto 3 in May. The activities will last one year.

The City Hall is launching Praia Circular through Riotur, via the Circular Plastics in the Americas Program (CPAP), an initiative led by the European Union. The project also has the support of the Secretariats of the Civil House, Environment and Climate, Sports and Public Order, as well as the concessionaire Orla Rio.

Riotur is responsible for coordinating the actions across the network of private companies in the area, including hotels, restaurants, kiosks and stalls, as well as service providers such as sports instructors. During the project, all parties involved will be required to provide sustainable cups and educational support to beach users. In addition, the sand will be analyzed in partnership with the Getulio Vargas Foundation.
