The Rio de Janeiro Municipal Health Department will hold the D-Day of flu vaccination next Saturday (10/5). Immunization will be carried out from 8 am to 17 pm in all 240 vaccination rooms in Primary Care units (family clinics and municipal health centers) in the city, in the two units of the Super Centro Carioca vaccination center and in hundreds of additional vaccination points (PVs) distributed throughout the city, located in strategic locations to facilitate access for people, such as squares, residents' associations, churches, shopping malls, schools, among others. More than 500 thousand doses of the flu vaccine will be made available. The complete list with the addresses of the PVs will be available for consultation at SMS website until Friday (9/5).
In the city of Rio, everyone over the age of six months can get the flu vaccine. The only exceptions for precautionary reasons are people with a history of severe allergy to a previous dose of the vaccine. There is no indication for children under six months of age. To get vaccinated, it is necessary to present an identification document and, if possible, the vaccination record. The dose is annual: those who got vaccinated last year need to get a new dose this year. For those who have already taken the vaccine previously, the vaccination schedule is a single dose. In 2025, more than 700 thousand users will have already been immunized against the flu and the goal by the end of the campaign is to protect around 3 million people from Rio.
– The peak of the disease occurs in the months of July and August, during the winter, so it is important that the population is immunized before this period. Ideally, people should seek to get vaccinated as soon as possible, to be protected. This vaccine is very safe and, to facilitate access, we have made hundreds of vaccination points available throughout the city and many units are also carrying out various recreational and cultural programs to make this D-Day a great celebration of health, as the people of Rio love and deserve. On the last D-Day, in 2024, 208 thousand people were vaccinated and the expectation is to surpass this mark in 2025, next Saturday – said the municipal Secretary of Health, Daniel Soranz.
The vaccine protects against three different serotypes of the disease: H1N1 Victoria, H3N2 Thailand and B Austria, which were the most common in the Southern Hemisphere last season. Immunization against the flu is essential to prevent complications, hospitalizations and deaths resulting from influenza virus infections. This year alone, the city of Rio has recorded 14 deaths and 156 hospitalizations due to the disease.
During D-Day, it will also be possible to get vaccinated against measles and update children's vaccination records if any vaccines are overdue. To do this, parents should take their children to fixed points in Primary Care units (family clinics and municipal health centers), where the health professional will check the records to apply any missing doses. Vaccination records can also be updated at the Centro Carioca de Vacinação, in Botafogo, from 8 am to 22 pm; and at the Super Centro Carioca de Vacinação, Campo Grande unit, in ParkShoppingCampoGrande, during the mall's opening hours.
