This Saturday (10), the Rio Municipal Health Department reached the impressive milestone of 1 million people vaccinated against influenza. On the D-Day of flu vaccination, more than 171 thousand doses were administered. There were more than 700 vaccination points, including family clinics and municipal health centers, in the two units of the Super Centro Carioca vaccination center and in hundreds of additional vaccination points (PVs) distributed throughout the city in strategic locations to facilitate people's access, such as squares, residents' associations, churches, shopping malls, schools, among others.
In the city of Rio, everyone over the age of six months can get the flu vaccine. The only exceptions for precautionary reasons are people with a history of severe allergy to a previous dose of the vaccine. There is no indication for children under six months of age. To get vaccinated, it is necessary to present an identification document and, if possible, the vaccination record. The dose is annual: those who were vaccinated last year need to get a new dose this year. For those who have already taken the vaccine previously, the vaccination schedule is a single dose.
– Every year, hundreds of people are hospitalized and die from the flu in the city of Rio de Janeiro. Therefore, the goal is to increase vaccination coverage and reduce deaths and hospitalizations due to influenza. We had incredible results, with many hospitalizations avoided and lives saved. The recommendation is that all people over six months of age seek out a health unit to get vaccinated. When you get vaccinated, you protect yourself and everyone around you. Today, there are more than 700 vaccination points spread throughout the city, and we need the support of Rio residents. The city of Rio is already the city that has vaccinated the most against the flu — it is the capital with the highest vaccination coverage — and we want to increase this number even further – says the municipal Secretary of Health, Daniel Soranz.
The vaccine protects against three different serotypes of the disease: H1N1 Victoria, H3N2 Thailand and B Austria, which were the most common in the Southern Hemisphere last season. Immunization against the flu is essential to prevent complications, hospitalizations and deaths resulting from influenza virus infections. This year alone, the city of Rio has recorded 14 deaths and 156 hospitalizations due to the disease.
– I came to get vaccinated through the SUS because my mother works here at the unit, and I took the opportunity to protect myself. The vaccine didn’t hurt at all — the needle is so thin that I didn’t even feel it! Being vaccinated by the secretary himself was one of the best experiences of my life – says little Vitória Lopes, 9 years old.
During D-Day, it was also possible to get vaccinated against measles and yellow fever and update children's vaccination records. In addition to D-Day, vaccinations against these diseases are also available in the 240 vaccination rooms in health units and at the Super Centro Carioca de Vacinação, Botafogo units (open from Sunday to Sunday, from 8 am to 22 pm) and Campo Grande, which is located in ParkShoppingCampoGrande (open from Sunday to Sunday, according to the shopping center's opening hours).
