Doctor's Day: professionals talk about choices and experiences

Love, hope and acceptance are the pillars of Rafael de Souza Pereira Falcão's career as a doctor, who graduated five years ago. And for Edmo Dutra Franco, a doctor for 30 years, great experiences have strengthened his role in the health field. On this October 18, Doctor's Day, professionals with different stories and careers tell what it's like to take care of people.

At 28 years old, Rafael has been working as a doctor at the Ricardo Lucarelli Souza Olympic Medalist Family Clinic (CF) in downtown Rio since 2023. As a professional at the unit for almost two years, he experiences several exciting stories every day. But the story that marked his life forever and inspired him to enter the health field happened throughout his childhood.

– I decided to become a doctor after seeing medicine surrounding me throughout my childhood and adolescence. My mother discovered she had cancer when I was 4 years old. I grew up following her routine and struggles, until she died when I was 15. I began to understand that this place of care was also something I wanted to have as a profession. Today, I take care of people, just as my mother was taken care of.

Rafael is one of more than 4 doctors hired since 2021 to work in Primary Health Care (APS) and in the hospital network in Rio, totaling 12,6 professionals working in the city.

In Primary Health Care, approximately 600 doctors were hired over the course of four years, and there are now 2.060 professionals available to the population of Rio de Janeiro in 239 family clinics and municipal health centers. The increase in the number of professionals contributed directly to expanding PHC coverage, which reached 78% and currently has 1.358 family health teams.

Welcoming families in the hospital's daily routine

And for those who have been working in the hospital network for years, the experiences are even more intense. Edmo, 57, is currently head of the pediatric surgery department at the Souza Aguiar Municipal Hospital. He has worked in the pediatric emergency department for over 20 years, not only caring for young patients, but also welcoming their families.

– In an emergency, we see many situations, different cases, but the feeling is practically the same. Working with children, especially as a father, I put myself in the shoes of the person responsible. A patient who left a lasting impression recently was Ana Beatriz, a victim of a stray bullet on Ilha do Governador. It was a story of overcoming that the entire team involved in her recovery will remember forever.

Specialized services have increased the number of consultation vacancies in the city

The Municipal Health Department has around 10 doctors working in the hospital network and in specialized services, such as the Valda do Borel Specialized Center for Infectious Diseases (CEI) and the Super Centro Carioca de Saúde (SCCS), which opened in 2022. The CEI offers consultations and exams for patients with diseases such as tuberculosis, viral hepatitis, leprosy and people living with HIV. The SCCS, in Benfica, is made up of three units – Centro Carioca de Especialidades, Centro Carioca de Diagnóstico e Tratamento por Imagem and Centro Carioca do Olho – and is one of the units responsible for the record increase in vacancies offered to the population of Rio through the Regulatory System (Sisreg).
