Espaço Travessia, a project by the Center for Culture, Science and Health of the Nise da Silveira Municipal Health Care Institute, presents the artistic occupation “On the Path of Dreams”. Curated by photographer Marcelo Valle and bringing together around one hundred guest artists, the works have as their raw material one of the most familiar inspirations for any person: dreams.

The occupation brings to the realm of images the many possibilities of dreaming, its dreamers and dreamed. Dreams as desire, as change, as hope, escape and even stolen dreams, whether due to oppression or problems of daily fatigue such as insomnia. The works are exhibited in small art galleries, arranged on two floors of a former psychiatric ward of the Nise da Silveira Municipal Institute. Paintings, sculptures, engravings, drawings, photographs, installations and immersive environments make up the occupation, in addition to stage interventions, video art, performances and music.

Omarcca is a 52-year-old visual artist who works as a security guard and has lived in Engenho de Dentro for four decades. He has always been a regular visitor to the institute and all its centers, along with his son. But he discovered the work of Espaço Travessia on the internet.

– I am a self-taught artist, but this is the first time I have exhibited my work as a group. I wanted to bring together Brazilian thinkers who, regardless of their problems, inspire our dreams and achievements. Greater knowledge of the world brings people together and gives them reasons to dream. Espaço Travessia is a place like this, a place of dreams. I came here once and brought a painting, but I never left and I don’t intend to. In this place, people feel welcomed and part of a whole, with the certainty that everyone has an artist inside them – says Omarcca.

The idea behind this space is to bring together artists from different places, with different life stories and relationships with art. They include users of the mental health network, university students, teachers, artists from communities and the suburbs, all together and mixed, without prejudice or stigma.

Crossing Space

The Center for Culture, Science and Health/Espaço Travessia occupies two floors of disused wards at the Nise da Silveira Municipal Institute. Its purpose is to be a meeting place, a place for artists to socialize, produce and promote their work, especially from the suburbs of Rio de Janeiro. The professionals who work there also promote mental health through various artistic and cultural activities, with spaces for exhibitions, studios, dance and theater rehearsals.

– We understand art and culture in their broadest sense, as activators or catalysts of the creative potential of individuals who are often or have been suppressed within psychiatric institutions – explains Marcelo Valle, coordinator of Espaço Travessia. He notes that art is understood as a creation and life process, a source and driver of health that goes beyond the absence of disease, but involves social, physical and mental well-being.

Since 2017, Espaço Travessia has been investing in an experimental program of artistic residency and temporary studios for local artists from Rio de Janeiro and the metropolitan region, with a focus on the suburbs of Rio de Janeiro, and from other states, who develop projects in the visual, performing and visual arts, as well as researchers from different areas. The goal of the Arte em Travessia Artistic Residency Program is to create a particular proximity to the processes of artistic production and relationships with mental health.
